143510 2003-05-12 11:03:00 Hi..
Has anyone else had trouble with Clear ISP lately? The number of "busy line" messages I get has been slowly growing, and tonight after some 10 or more tries I sat here remembering the bad old days with Ihug and the huge list of complaints in the Ihug newsgroup. Coming to Clear was such a treat...just about everything about it as good. But now I'm thinking of switching again...can anyone reccomend a good flatrate provider who has reliable news groups and enough modems to cope with peak time? Or is there such an animal at all? Cheers...K.

143512 2003-05-12 12:26:00 I think they all go through that phase on a regular cycle.

Resources are good initially, but won't be upgraded until average access (lack of) reaches a trigger point, by which time many users are complaining.
Some leave, and cause the problem to begin to occur on another ISP, meanwhile Clear have by then increased the ratio of modems/users.

I have always been with Xtra, except for the early days (mid 90's) when I was with IBM. Am now on Jetstream, and its not an issue as I never disconnect the router, even when the PCs are off.

143513 2003-05-12 12:42:00 I have to say Xtra flat rate (dial up) is extremly good. I never get below 50.9kbs connection and nearly always connet at 52.0kbs. Never get "couldn't connect" message and always get good downloads. I have to say, go with them. JamesStewart (874)
143514 2003-05-13 04:12:00 Every ISP strikes a time where connections are slow or impossible (when every man and his dog decide to go online at the same time).
I have been using Clear ever since Zfree closed, and very seldom have trouble getting online. Maybe I'm just lucky?
There wouldn't be many better ISP's around, IMHO.

143515 2003-05-13 04:20:00 ok i have used clear and had no problems with dial up but once dialed in had no access cos they stuffed up passwords and access to mail and such so for how many hours on phone trying to fix talking to heaps of techies as well have now only got them on a set time $amount and i have forwarded all that mail to my xtra acount which have had no problems from the minute i had dial up. marvelous.

but its who gives you the best service on the day you most need it that counts and ongoing support price does not always come into it.
in my experience you could pay top $$ and still get crap. and the cheapest rate $ can work that way to.

access and back up is my main priority. and hopefully that includes good speed access and loading.

but then i dont know about others as ive only used these 2.

143516 2003-05-13 12:30:00 Thanks folks...I think I'll take a look at xtra K. paradox (1082)
143517 2003-05-13 12:50:00 Before you go jumping ship...

I recently had the same problem with paradise (owned by telstraclear) for about 4 weeks. The remote computer would answer the call then just go silent until my modem timed out, which it reported as busy.

Everything is back to normal now.
