143697 2003-05-22 03:07:00 No joy, I tried what you said (/sbin/hdparm -tT) on /dev/dvd and /dev/hda and both gave the same:

[root@AMD1700 hda]# /sbin/hdparm -i /dev/dvd

/dev/dvd:

Model=SAMSUNG DVD-ROM SD-616F, FwRev=F103, SerialNo=
Config={ Fixed Removeable DTR<=5Mbs DTR>10Mbs nonMagnetic }
RawCHS=0/0/0, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=0
BuffType=unknown, BuffSize=0kB, MaxMultSect=0
(maybe): CurCHS=0/0/0, CurSects=0, LBA=yes, LBAsects=0
IORDY=yes, tPIO={min:120,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120}
PIO modes: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4
DMA modes: sdma0 sdma1 sdma2 mdma0 mdma1 mdma2
UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 *udma2
AdvancedPM=no

[root@AMD1700 hda]# /sbin/hdparm -tT /dev/dvd

/dev/dvd:
Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 0.68 seconds =188.33 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 4.99 seconds = 12.82 MB/sec
[root@AMD1700 hda]#

hda gave same results except the Timing buffer-cache reads: 128MB in 0.71 seconds!

Sooo...

My mothoerboard is quite new, its a K7S5A EliteGroup mobo :-)

Any suggestions?

Thanks

143700 2003-05-27 02:00:00 Another option is that your ide chipset isn't supported by rh8, i had the same problem with rh8 with my nforce chipset until i installed the drivers from nvidia. I had a quick look for drivers for your mobo at ecs.com.tw and could only find windows drivers. Try installing rh9 since it supports more hardware than rh8. rh9 also sets up dma as default if it can. rsnic (3780)
143701 2003-05-27 02:47:00 Okay... Looks like i'll be looking for RedHat 9 again.. silly me gave my last copy to Clueless... ;-) Chilling_Silently (228)
143702 2003-05-27 23:58:00 Ive been searching around online.. and Ive seen some success storys with the K7S5A mobo on Linux...

They've got DMA going.. so why cant I do it in RedHat 8?

I've seen somebody say they did it in RedHat 7.1.. and another person do it in Mandrake 8.1

Do I need to play with my BIOS settings, or perhaps add something to my GRUB boot loader to configure it to use DMA on both IDE channels?

Would it kill it if I tried that /sbin/hdparm -d1 on /dev/hdb?

Thanks

143703 2003-05-30 07:58:00 No it will not kill it, the drive might lock up but it is impermanent so the next time you boot it will revert to old settings, don't add it to rc.local until u sure it works this script runs when linux does. rsnic (3780)
143704 2003-05-31 10:23:00 Okay... Searching google with the 'right' criteria produced the following results:

Add the following to the /etc/modules.conf:

options ide-cd dma=

It took me about 50 mins to find that in google...

Rebooted and that was it, perfect DVD Playback!!!

Thanks a lot for all your help still :-)

Cheers

A very happy Chill.
