| 144107 | 2003-05-14 10:47:00 | hi folks just wondering can tdays new hard disk drives go okay on old motherboards?.. eg i have a motherboard which is um udma 66 ..not really sure what that means..so if i buy a new hard disk will it peform exactly to its specs..eg 7200 rpm etc..or is does it spin at that speed regardless what m/board its on..someone want to enlighten me please.. cheers |

| 144108 | 2003-05-14 11:04:00 | drives spin at eg 7200rpm reguardless of motherboard. however the speed of the ide connection will limit the MAX data transfer speed. eg ata66 will limit it to 66mb/s even if the drive is ata100. however thats not a big problem as not many drives can actually do a sustained 100mb/s speed so there is not a lot of speed lost when useing an ata100 drive on an ata66 motherboard. clear as mud ??? ;-) |
