143909 2003-05-14 00:10:00 hi,

I have owned a CD writer for over 8 monthes now, then all of a sudden it has stopped reading CD's. I installed it my self, on my P3 566mhz comp with 384 megs, I am running win 98 on it. The CD writer is a Aopen 40x12x48 CD writer.
this is what happens, I go to Nero, try and burn a CD, insert blank medium, I do that, not a blank medium, And I knopw they are all blank because I purchased two different lots and nthing works. I then went to my computer and placed a Audio CD in- nothing happend, I then put it in my DVD rom, it worked fine. I reinstalled nero v5, Still nothing, Fixed my registry, still nothing, I even updated my driver for the CD writer , it said everything was fine and used the old driver. But I know that everything is not fine because the stupid thing still aint workin. Any ways any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

143910 2003-05-14 02:45:00 They should last more than 8 months. Have a look with the tray out for any stray pieces of paper in the unit which might block the light path.

But they do die. Usually you would see a gradual failure --- not being able to read certain discs, so it could easily be some obstruction.

143911 2003-05-14 07:03:00 is it the 4048 aopen model? I have that and its basically the same stats as yours. I haven't had mine as long as you though. Mine was saying the blank cds werent blank as well. I fixed it with a good shutdown - power plug pulled for 15secs and then everything was working again.

Have you tried upgrading the firmware for your writer? Go to the official site and follow the instructions ;)
