143897 2003-05-13 23:04:00 I currently looking into my study options, And to start with Im thinking of doing a short course in Java to get me started.

Other options would be VB, XML, HTML, ASP, PHP.. and whatever else I can find available.

I know there's a lot of people out there with a wide variety of qualifications, so what would you all suggest for somebody like myself if I were hoping to pursue a career in IT.

I have a lot of 'real world' knowledge, but am thinking I may need to simply get a piece of paper to proove that I can do things.

What would you all suggest studying, such as a language, or a business program etc.

Thanks :-)

143898 2003-05-14 01:56:00 Java programmers are in huge demand - I read a while back that immigrants with that qualification would almost instantly get approval for NZ residency. Greg S (201)

Excellent. I'm a 4th year comp. sci. student graduating at the end of the year. Although C/C++ would still be my first choice.

CS: I've used java and vb. Mainly java.

Java is a bit harder to get started with, but is much nicer for larger programmes. And would probably be a better choice if you were wanting a programming job.

BTW, if your wanting a degree you learn a lot about programming in general doing comp sci. Which helps you write more efficient programmes & makes learning new languages easier (I've used ~7 in the last year). But I'm probably biased.

143900 2003-05-14 06:57:00 Okay, so its two for Java... What about RHCE or MSCE... or CCNA? Chilling_Silently (228)
143901 2003-05-14 07:05:00 Where do you want to go in your later life??? - I presume that's why Microsoft use "Where do you want to go today" on their old promotions cyberchuck (173)
143902 2003-05-14 07:08:00 Depends on what area of IT you're wanting to work in really. If you're wanting to be a network admin the programming side of things won't matter quite the same ;).

In the way of programming it seems that most places seem to teach Java in the first year. I'm at CPIT at the moment and am currently doing some Jade programming (darned assignments) it's not too bad. Last year I did some Pascal which didn't really seem to help at all.

If you're looking at webdesign I'd definitely choose PHP to do in conjunction with HTML (or XHTML) as PHP is free and runs on both nix and doze based servers. Where as ASP only really runs on IIS unless you invest in other software. Also PHP is a lot more like real programming. ASP seems to be all easy like.

143903 2003-05-14 07:57:00 Well, if you're interested in web design, I'm a tutor at Tai Poutini Polytech, teaching (among other things) web programming to second year computing students and I have to say that I find the students who have a good understanding of HTML do better than those who dont. If you’re ok with HTML then I wouldn’t bother getting a separate qualification in that first. I’d go Java and/or PHP myself – I quite like using ASP but that’s more because I’m comfortable in it due to my Visual Basic back ground than because it’s a better language.

If its not web design specifically that interests you but more general programming then I’d probably suggest Visual Basic as a good starting language to get your head around programming concepts (if you need to) then maybe go to Java or C++ - of course I’m rather fond of Jade too, which seems to be getting more and more popular both here and overseas.

Hope that’s helped a bit,

Jen Z.

143904 2003-05-14 08:59:00 Well this is sort of on your topic.....

99-bottles-of-beer.ls-la.net

It uses a total of 515 different programming languages to give a version of the song "99 Bottles of Beer on the wall."

It will at least show what language you might want to program in. :-)

I note that COBOL is not used though. Maybe that's one *I* can do as not many people use it these days.

Nahhhhhhh!!!! I still think I have a life. :-)

143905 2003-05-14 09:56:00 Study up large and do everything that interests you, why stick with one thing?

I've gone through programming, web design, graphic design and computer maintenance. Next on the list would be advanced networking for me.

If you enjoy computers do all that you can with them, that's my theory and and I quite enjoy what I do.

143906 2003-05-14 22:01:00 Well, I have a possibliity of a Job soon, but I've got my eye on a course from Unitec.ac.nz

Im not really into programming though... Ive made Qwik Chat.. but I just dont think that's my vibe.. I loved doing Support/Helpdesk for IDG... and would like another in that field... I also did Network Admin.. and some of that for the CyberCafe too... I think that's where I wanna head.

Which is why Im thinking MCSE, CCNA, RHCE or something.. but I dont have the $13K for becoming RHCE...

So I wanna start smaller :-)

Thanks
