Here (support.microsoft.com) is the Microsoft article about fixing it, required some registry editing, but it's pretty straightfoward. This is the manual way, I assume Windows Auto-Update downloads a patch that does the job. |

| 144552 | 2003-05-28 08:05:00 | Hi Crozzy Go back to the Windows Update site, and on the left-hand side click on View Installation History. Look through the list for that update and see whether it says "Successful" under Status. If it says "Failed", try downloading it again. That particular update failed to install on the first attempt for me. |
