144185 2003-05-14 22:25:00 I'm using XP Pro. After a session on the net I could not shut down or restart and I noticed virus checker AVG was closed down. Tried to restore to an earlier time but no difference. Tried to uninstall AVG but could not. AVG will not work at all (tells me language file is missing) and can not do restores because of improper shut downs. Just who or what is pulling my strings here? PaddzO (3695)
144186 2003-05-15 01:27:00 Try uninstalling AVG, then reinstall it.
You should still be able to uninstall it from start / control panel / add/remove programs.
I would recomend that when you get this sorted, you grab a firewall (www.kerio.com) and also Ad-Aware (www.lavasoft.de).
These will help with the running of your PC, and keep it running how you want.

also there is [url=http://www.zonelabs.com/]ZoneAlarm (www.kerio.com) which is easier to use & configure then kerio & ZoneAlarm does a good job :)

144188 2003-05-15 06:25:00 Thanks for replying chaps but . . . I cannot uninstall AVG using either Add-Remove Pro or add remove progs thru control panel . I run Zone alarm pro and it has noticed nothing . I run Ad -Aware 6 and it has picked up nothing . I've just ran a scan by Spy Bot Search & Destroy and it found 90 problems which just curries my little brain, time for a beer! PaddzO (3695)
144189 2003-05-15 21:05:00 Maybe you need to run MSconfig and stop AVG from starting up. That might allow you to remove and reinstall.
Yell if you don't know how to do that.

144190 2003-05-16 07:31:00 Hi, thanks Robo but this still did not help. I get the message when trying to uninstall - "cannot init language file". I have also tried to install another virus checker to see what is in my system but it warned me not to install if my previous checker AVG remained uninstalled - serious system problems will happen! 144191 2003-05-16 08:42:00 have you tried to do a virus scan using the rescue disk's? assuming you made them.
Have you tried reinstalling AVG ? assuming that language file may have become corrupt?

Cheers Steve

PS: You could always do a free online virus scan here (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/)

144192 2003-05-20 22:35:00 Use MSconfig to stop AVG at startup.
Download JV16 powertools and use the registry tool to remove AVG from add/remove list.
Delete grisoft folder under program files
Run spybot again.

144193 2003-05-26 22:10:00 Thanks Chaps. Did not make rescue disk! Ran 3 online virus checkers - didn't find anything, did as suggested using JV16 power tools and finally uninstalled AVG. I then reinstalled it and it didn't find any greebies. Decided to install new virus checker AntiVir XP, it found VBS/newloveA & W32 Kenston 1895X, also TDS-3 found worm P2P Flowex. I think I'm rid of them all now. PaddzO (3695)
144194 2005-01-11 03:22:00 PaddzO & Pheonix many thanks, I did what you sed and drank many bieren especially prior to taking on anymore AVG language problems . I downloaded the JV16 powertools as suggested and since then I have been able to uninstall AVG failed files and put my broomstick away . Try getting any response from Grisoft, it's like dragging your tongue thru the El Azizia desert .

Dank u .
