144257 2003-05-15 10:30:00 BM, I think you need to re-read 4bes post.

>if you needed to boot from a floppy disk you had to wait for the overlay software to load first, then press the spacebar at the prompt and put the floppy disk in and press enter

He is saying (if I read it right) thats what you do if you NEED to boot from a floppy. Not what you do to boot normally.

How often would you need to?

Is that an inconvenience?

144258 2003-05-15 11:06:00 I quite honestly never use a Floppy nowadays.. have a 98 Boot Disk on Bootable CD-ROM.. I can write almost 200 Megs in the time it takes to copy 1.44MB to/from a floppy!

Go with the PCI IDE/RAID controller :-)

144259 2003-05-15 22:07:00 Toddled off to bed last night convinced that the piggy bank would get a hiding today as I purchased a new HD and PCI IDE controller .

Woke up in the middle of the night thinking how will the BIOS recognise the new HD when it’s connected through a controller in a PCI slot?

Would a BIOS of 1997 vintage be capable?

Thought I’d better get my head around what I’m doing before I’ve got the computer in a million pieces and am unable to “Press F1”

Ahhh, thanks for pointing that out GF . So, with the overlay software one would just have to hit the spacebar normally, but would have to physically load the overlay software if the occasion arose when one had to boot from a start-up floppy . Yes/No :p

Cheers

144260 2003-05-15 22:59:00 I can confirm that what Godfather and . . . um . . . who was it? I can't see their name now :p . . . said about pressing the spacebar if you wanted to boot from the floppy .

You would boot up normally just the same as you do now, with just a couple of extra seconds to allow you time to press the spacebar if you needed to .

A PCI IDE controller sounds quite good but if you can get and use the software overlay it would save you a few dollars .

> Woke up in the middle of the night thinking

Don't you just hate it when that happens? I wish I could have these "brainwaves" during the day because I never get back to sleep again afterwards . And on the rare occasion that I do I have forgotten the important details by the time I wake up . :p :D

144261 2003-05-15 23:09:00 Hello BM, the mainboard BIOS will say there is no hard drive there, then the BIOS chip on the PCI controller card will kick in and auto detect hard drives connected to it. The HDDs are connected to that card, not to the IDE connectors on the Mainboard. This system is actually very good indeed as you can have 4 IDE devices on your mainboard, and then another 4 IDE devices connected to the PCI controller. Terry Porritt (14)
144262 2003-05-25 00:01:00 Just a wee update for those who have helped with this problem .

Well, I went to buy the PCI-IDE card from DSE and was told it wouldn’t work with win98se!
I protested that the website stated it would work with DOS and every Microsoft Operating System since! Ahhh, don’t think so say’s the salesman, I’ll check and get back to you .

So far silence! Not a dickey bird!

On to Tauranga Computers to buy the 20gig HD . Told the salesperson what my proposal was and there was a bit of head scratching and consulting and the general opinion was it would probably work but they had never tried it .

Next question, could they supply a PCI-IDE card that would work with win98se and their HD . Short answer NO! However, they would investigate my proposal and E-Mail me their findings .

So far Zip!

Finally, I took your advise Terry and asked what utilities and documentation came with the HD and was advised NONE! The “Retail” version did, but they neither had, nor knew the price of the retail version!

So that’s it, a week later and no further forward .

Hacked off Bob . :-

144263 2003-05-25 00:32:00 Why don't you go around the corner from tga computers and see Noel at Bay Computers next to the Shell garage. He may be able to help.

144264 2003-05-25 03:11:00 A PCI IDE card won't work with W98? :_|

The BIOS on the card does not know or care what operating system is there . It provides standard routines for an operating system to use to access the disk .

The only trick is to make sure that the MB BIOS is set to show "Not installed" for IDE disks . (It's robably best to disable the MB interfaces) . That's so the boot process will look for the real boot disk on the new interface .

144265 2003-05-25 04:31:00 Have you flashed your BIOS yet? I can't see the harm in doing so. In fact I flashed my bios, cd-rw and cd-rom about 3 days ago just for the sake of it :p Well not quite true, my cd-rom wasn't reading multisession cd-r's haha.

I didn't use a new floppy disc, just used one that was in good condition, then wiped it with a dos program, then formatted it again. You go to the motherboard manufacturers website, and download your bios upgrade, then extract the file and put it onto floppy. Then boot the system remembering to press alt+f2 or whatever to get into awdFlash then it does it automatically. Use AIDA to help you find your motherboard details.

Then I can't see why your BIOS won't recognise a new, big hard drive.

You could always get rid of your music by putting them on a cd. I remember life without a cd-rw drive, it always took lots of work in keeping important data. Nowadays I can't do without them :)

144266 2003-05-25 05:36:00 I must confess Graham I was somewhat shocked at being told the PCI-IDE card wouldn’t work with win 98se. Might still give it a go, in fact, probably will.

No, haven’t flashed the BIOS PoWa as I couldn’t find an update that would fix the 8gig limitation problem. I found one to fix most everything else though. :D

Finally, It’s just occurred to me that the new HD I was interested in is a Seagate ST3200 (14A), $132. This wouldn’t happen to be one of the faulty models I saw mentioned on this forum some time ago would it? :(

Cheers
