| 144368 | 2003-05-17 04:31:00 | > Then I actually got some formal HTML training and the tutor's anal retentiveness rubbed off on me.. now I code html to standards I notice that although you included the "alt" tag you did not include the image sizes for your graphics. Did you just not include the sizes in your example or do you not bother including them when you write your pages? Apparently it is "correct" practice to list graphic sizes so that the browser can reserve the correct amount of space for them on the page while it is loading rather than guessing or resizing the page after they have loaded. The text can then be read before the page has finished loading rather than the whole page "jumping around" while the graphics are being downloaded. |

| 144369 | 2003-05-17 07:07:00 | nah.. i'm not *that* anal ;) I excluded the "http://" from my above absolute links examples.. bad habit but I didnt want to be too pedantic at the time.. as for images I still have the bad tendency to code for a particular resolution and resample the images accordingly as required using irfanview.. most pages I make are fairly simple so they arent going to look horridly bad in 640x480 and they arent going to look horridly bad in 1600x1200 either... I tend to lean more towards the browser-compatibility and tidiness of code side of things as apposed to the how-it-looks side of things... which isnt an uncommon thing.. I know a few webdevs who are great at coding but shocking with graphics (more programatically/logically inclined), and vice versa(more artistic).. you really need one of each to make a really good site I do see the value of putting in the sizes, but to me its not required and it makes the code messier, so I avoid it if I can... I use it on a when-needed basis, otherwise I just leave it alone.. If the validator doesnt whinge about it, i'm happy.. and the validator has never complained to me about the lack of static sizing ;) |
