2003-05-17 00:18:00 | Yes I had a look at FAQ & printed off all 22 pages. However!!!!I am on Xp & Maryann is on 98SE. We are networked thro a cable, but M cannot get out to the Net. A message comes up "Server not found", even tho the symbol for the 98SE is connected displays. No problem with the XP main computer. What could be wrong?? Also the printer will now not print from 98, the printer is connected to XP comp. Up to a couple of days ago everything was Ok. No new downloads other than updates, Windows, AVG. I tell a lie, installed ZA. But even with ZA turned off No Go. HelpI am in Deep Shtum. Poppa John

2003-05-17 00:27:00 | so the internet connection worked fine on the 98 machine before you installed ZA? or has the internet connection not worked at all on the 98 machine? what machine have you got ZA installed on? host-based software firewalls tend to really stuff up networks.. or rather each computer's ability to talk to one another... if the 98 machine is asking the xp machine for a resource, za could well be blocking that, as well as a whole lot of other things with some software firewalls you are basically looking at reinstalling windows to fix the problem.. with others you are looking at just uninstalling the program and running a single pass of regcleaner... I'm not too sure about what you'll have to do to fix what ZA has done...

2003-05-17 00:32:00 | whetu. The Internet connection was fine until a few days ago. The only new instal was ZA, which is on the XP comp (main) PJ | Poppa John (284) | |
2003-05-17 01:01:00 | yeah.. sounds to me like ZA is blocking all(or most) communication with the 98 machine. Try uninstalling ZA and see if that makes any difference.. also double check the network settings on your XP machine and make sure they are how they should be... Another thing to try is to download regcleaner and give that a run... XP has a built in firewall that is sufficient enough for a home user's needs, and it doesnt stuff up internet connection sharing like other software firewalls do...

2003-05-17 01:04:00 | Not sure if this will help, because I use Sygate Personal Firewall rather than ZA. To get the network to go, I had to create a rule in SPF that would allow all connections from the IP addresses of the other computers on the network (from memory the rule is based on a range, rather than specifying each address one by one, as they are all in numerical order). At the moment all computers are on XP Pro, but I set it up originally with two on XP and one on W98SE Also, are you sure you are not running both the XP firewall and ZA? If so, turn off the XP firewall. Hope that helps John

Hope this helps. |

2003-05-17 01:16:00 | John H. I was using Sygate & was happy with it, so was the 98. However it threw a wobbly & would not work, kept asking me for Money!!! (Out of my Pension, no way). So I uninstalled & put ZA in it's place. ZA is also now uninstalled (as per whetu) & may have no protectio. How do I determine if XP firewall is operative & will it also protect the 98?? PJ | Poppa John (284) | |
2003-05-17 01:20:00 | the xp firewall will be in your internet connection properties... there should be a tab there that allows you to enable/disable the firewall... norton personal firewall 2k3 isnt too shabby... it has a networking wizard that sets things up to allow traffic from other machines... but then again a year after you install it, its going to ask for more money just like sygate did... what you wanna do is find an open source firewall.. though I'm unsure of any that have win32 binaries...

2003-05-17 02:01:00 | >John H . I was using Sygate & was happy with it, so was the 98 . However it threw a wobbly & would not work, kept asking me for Money!!! Hmmm . I have been using SPF for more than a year, and I am sure I have a free edition - it has never asked me for money . Did you register it for home and personal use? >How do I determine if XP firewall is operative . . . ? Go to Network Connections, right click on Local Area Connection and drag down to Properties - there are three tabs; bring Advanced to the front, and either check or uncheck the box there - check to turn on firewall, uncheck to turn off . >& will it also protect the 98?? Sorry, that is beyond my capability and knowledge! John
