| 144659 | 2003-05-16 01:09:00 | Earlier in the week I was quietly browsing through a web page when my monitor turned black and everything locked up. It took me half an hour to restart after pulling the plug and waiting. To cut a long story short I found that my modem had been dumped. I entered network connections (in XP) and found that my options for "dial up" had been greyed out. The only choice I had was for broad band which is no good to me. There was no way I could connect. I installed the modem drivers and got some silly message about getting the operator to dial up. I worked out that somehow I had lost the files that ran network connections. I phoned MS (silly me). I explained what had happened and asked how I could re-install them. The telephone answerer (I didn't even get to speak to a technitian) asked who my ISP was. I told him. He said that it was their job to sort it out. After explaining to him that all my ISP connections where in place, and how could it be their fault when my phone wouldn't dial out to the ISP. Next question: What make of computer did I have. Told him. "Well it's their fault". That left me a bit flabbergasted. I made a quiet suggestion that the problem might be with Windows. NO NO NO!!! Windows doesn't do that sort of thing. I laughed and he hung up. I eventualy fixed if by doing a full delete and format. The format must have fixed my computer too.Clever Windows. Just one tip for people, like me, who use phony names when registering software. If you do it with Norton make sure you remember what name you used. Norton wouldn't update because it had no record of activation date. I now have Norton AV 2003. And before anyone mentions Linux. It has no drivers for my mouse, modem, scanner and printer. So Windows is my only choice. But I'm going again. Jack. |
