144614 2003-05-15 22:25:00 Is it a fact of life that my old, well not that old, Canon MPC 20 printer/fax and windows xp will never be united as there is no xp printer driver for an MPC20, or is there some way past this problem.

Thanks for any suggestions or bad news.

Andy.

Either get another printer, or
install the recommended operating system, and -
in the future check whether devices are supported before installing an operating system .

ImageMaker MPC20 and MultiPASS C20 . * Product sold in New Zealand only *

"Windows 2000/XP support?
This device is not compatible with Windows 2000 and Windows XP .

Microsoft has stipulated strict certification criteria for the design of hardware and device drivers in order to be Windows 2000 or Windows XP compatible .
Windows 2000 and Windows XP are not necessarily backwardly compatible in terms of software applications, hardware devices, and device driver software . Upgrading to these versions of Windows may require upgrades to some of the other software and hardware items being used with the system .
It is strongly recommended that users consult the Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Listing prior to changing their operating system . This service is available at the following URL: . microsoft . com/hcl/default . asp" target="_blank">www . microsoft . com

Whilst every effort is made to anticipate future directions of operating system design, it is not possible to guarantee compatibility of hardware and associated software drivers with unreleased future operating systems .

This product was designed some time before the certification criteria for Windows XP and Windows 2000 became available .

For this product, Canon advertises compatibility with the following operating systems: Windows 95, 98, Millennium Edition (Windows ME)

Why ask the Obvious?

Well, for starters its not obvious.
Driver hunting is new to some people, and everybody has to start somewhere.

I have a TV tuner that's been deemed incompatible with Win98, but yet I have it going perfect.
I have a graphics card that is not multi-monitor compatible with AGP cards - Yet I have it working.

Where there's a will, there's a way. If there isnt, get somebody to program you one.

Ive done upgrades before that 'shouldnt' have worked wiith XP yet they do, so please, have a heart!

144619 2003-05-16 01:57:00 Been playing with linux on a p233 with 128... Linux didnt click with me so i put xp on it... it only just works... but...

This puter came with an epson printer... that had no valid xp drivers...
so i went throught the list of drivers that get shiped with xp...
(Device manager > view > show hidden devices > "your printer" > update drivers > then look thru the driver list....)

and asigned it another epson driver... it warned me not to do this... but i got my printer working..... Sweet as....

Also had to do this with a modem on win2000

Good old 'old' hardware...

144620 2003-05-16 01:58:00 Well thanks for your Helpful comments Merlin (NOT), I already knew all that useless information but as I have found in the past there are some people who are ingenious enough to get past these little problems. I guess you're one of the few who can't be classified as ingenious....ha ha. kiwicantab (3800)

144622 2003-05-16 03:06:00 This is the reason I will not buy Canon product if I have a choice .

Have had the same issue with a very expensive large format printer, that was unuseable on 32 bit Windows platforms . The drivers were for 16 bit OS only, and within a year the company upgraded all IT systems, only to find that the driver would not operate correctly .

Canon did not want to know, and the product was specific to Australasia so we were effectively told "Tough"

Needless to say we never bought another Canon product, and changed to HP . They consistently upgraded drivers for new operating systems .

And yes, GodFather >
I agree that HP do put out some very good printers and upgrade the drivers to suit.

However, Canon were very quick in the printer market, and I think a while back a lot of people were buying Canon. I believe now most people will not purchase a Canon printer, but HP and a number of others are becoming increasingly popular :-)
