144570 2003-05-15 11:58:00 Im wating to schedule tasks in Linux, namely this is what I wanna happen:

In Doze, I have WinAmp default app for .pls playlists and mp3's.
WMP9 is the default app for .m3u playlists.

Now, I leave WinAmp playing all night long (Ive had a discussion with Susan, she says I should turn it off.... in my sleep... I want her to teach me :D) but it plays quietly, and that's how I sleep... dont ask :-)

Now, at 7:15 I get woken up by WMP9 playing a playlist consisting of two MP3 songs (Coz I want WinAmp to be default MP3 app). The songs play loud enough to wake me up immediately, so I dont really listen to them.. namely coz I know I have to get up to turn it down!

Now, how would I do this, or something similar in RedHat 8?

144571 2003-05-15 12:34:00 Now that's a good question :)

To run something you use cron (www.die.net) and this gives an explaination. I imagine that you would just need to tell it to run your media player.

144574 2003-05-15 13:44:00 Can think of a few off hand..

GTS (GNOME task scheduler) (freshmeat.net)

GNOME Task Scheduler (freshmeat.net)

GNOME Crontab Editor (recommended) (freshmeat.net)

The important thing to remember is that all of these require the "crond" daemon to be running to work.

144575 2003-05-15 16:02:00 Interesting idea ;) Can you do this in Doze too? I would be interested then! I'm not fully integrated with linux yet :p

On the other hand, if a stereo can be configured to wake you up to your favourite music, then for a computer it should be a piece of cake!

There you go, Chill - if you can create a chat program then this should be a piece of cake! Nice little pocket money earner for you, too. ;-)

144577 2003-05-15 22:33:00 No need - it all comes with Doze (I think even Win95 :-))

Make a playlist in WinAmp and save it as an m3u or pls... take your pick

Now set WMP to be the default for that playlist only, leave the other for WinAmp.

Go to sleep leaving WinAmp playing, but have the WinAmp slider down as far as possible. There's a setting somewhere too which lets WinAmp have its own volume control and not use the normal Wav/PCM control's (The one normally right next to Master).

Simply set the task of loading the playlist at whenever time you wanna arise, and make sure WMP has the volume set to high and you're peachy :-)

I left the WinAmp Vis going last night, and I think it shut down WinAmp somehow? I woke up and WinAmp wasnt going... and my door is locked..???

Hope this helps,

And thanks, I'll check out those FreshMeat projects :-)

That just leaves DVD playback in Linux (With sound) and Im one happy user :-)

Cheers

Chill.

144578 2003-05-16 03:08:00 IIRC there is also a "kcron" that comes with KDE. I can't check because I'm using windows for the first time in weeks (new enermax PSU stopped it crashing).

No I can't help with the DVD stuff :-). I bought one of those cheap mustek ones.

144579 2003-05-16 03:25:00 Didnt have kcron, GTS came up saying they no longer supported it from that URL (I'll try google), and here's the error message I get for Gnome-CronTab:

[josiah@AMD1700 josiah]$ gnome-crontab
Can't locate Gnome.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/lib/gnome-crontab/ /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.0/i386-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.0 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.0/i386-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.0 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.0/i386-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.0 /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl .) at /usr/lib/gnome-crontab//Gnome/Crontab.pm line 9.

Ive installed and re-installed as both me and su, no joy.

Press on though I will.

Thanks
