144931 2003-05-17 03:34:00 John H. Ok, your para 3. Have checked box to enable, how will I know if it is workind? An icon somwhere? PJ Poppa John (284)
144932 2003-05-17 04:21:00 Poppa John, when you have got yourself all sorted out, instead of Zone Alarm you could try using Kerio firewall. I find it excellent. It is a bit more advanced than ZA but if you read their instructions in Help you should be OK. It is free and also supports ICS.

Otherwise Win XP's built-in firewall will protect you sufficiently from incoming unwanted traffic but will not alert you to outgoing traffic like Kerio does.

144934 2003-05-17 05:13:00 Susan how can I tell if the XP firewall is working? I cannot see a new icon anywhere. PJ Poppa John (284)

It doesn't let you know anything that I know of Poppa John, you just have to trust that it is happening .

If I understand it correctly, the XP Firewall is designed to stop intrusions into your PC, whereas firewalls like Sygate are designed to stop both unauthorised incoming and outgoing traffic . And Sygate and ZA let you know what is happening - I don't think XP firewall does anything like that .

That is why I prefer to turn off XP and just use Sygate .

144936 2003-05-17 06:15:00 To tell if the Win XP firewall is enabled or not go to Start > My Network Places > View Network Connections and in that window it will say "Firewalled" in your ISP connection status. Susan B (19)
144937 2003-05-17 06:19:00 Poppa, if you want to test your firewall go to www.grc.com and do their Shields Up test. That will let you know if your firewall is working or not. Susan B (19)
144938 2003-05-17 06:25:00 Susan B XP firewalled as per your explanation. Could/should I do something for the 98SE Computer? PJ Poppa John (284)
144939 2003-05-17 06:42:00 Oops, I forgot one. :8} Oh well, boosts my post count up a bit, doesn't it? :p :D

>& will it also protect the 98??

The firewall on your host computer (the one connected to the internet) will protect the other computer as well so no, you do not need to do anything to the Win 98 computer.
