144581 2003-05-16 04:04:00 Back in linux...

kcron is part of the kde-admin package which you may not have installed.

I can't help with the gnome-cron.

144582 2003-05-16 04:29:00 Nope, no KDE installed, but I'll check through the Package Manager for RedHat 8 and see if its in there :-)

Im just using the default Gnome that came with RedHat 8, How do I find out what version of Gnome Im running? KDE is 3.0.8 I think (When I install it, I use Gnome and Ive downloaded XFCE)?!

144584 2003-05-17 02:53:00 Why the insistence on using a GUI? Make the cron entry in a terminal screen. Then all you have to do in future is change a number in the file if you want to change the time, or comment the line out if you don't want to have the next morning.

In the time people have spent arguing about it you could have done it.

GUIs SLOW YOU DOWN. They will always be slower to use than a command line.

144585 2003-05-17 08:39:00 okay.. I wanna play the following MP3 then at 7:15 AM monday to saturday:
/mnt/hdb5/My\ Music/POD - Alive.mp3

All CaPs and everything take into account.. I'm expecting it to open in XMMS (Or if you can suggest a command line MP3 player).

I tried something and got the date and time to look like:
15 7 * * (cant remember the last value) then I put the above line in..
To edit the crontab I was root, and typed:
crontab -u josiah -e
and that brought it up in Vi I believe.
Anyways.. What do I need to do there?

Ive read the Man pages... but not much help for a n00b like myself.. ALL the man pages on Cron, CronTab etc.

Thanks Graham :-)

144587 2003-05-19 01:41:00 First, try starting the programme in a terminal window. Whatever command works in that (even if it starts a GUI dependent programme, as long as the GUI is running) will work in cron. Have a look at the standard cron files which the system uses. They're in /etc/ somewhere ... probably /etc/cron in sub directories called "daily, weekly, etc. Graham L (2)

Err... What program?

144589 2003-05-19 02:38:00 Whichever one does your music playing ... Or anything you want to start with cron. Try the command manually, then you can have cron run it at selected times. Graham L (2)
