145265 2003-05-17 21:36:00 Hi I have just purchased a pc for my home use and to keep in touch with my family in the UK they want me to get a mic so I can talk to them. Is a mic all I need to purchase and if so how do I get it up and running? thanks I know its proberbly not rocket science but I am new to this :) multi (3822)
145266 2003-05-17 22:00:00 basically yes a mic is all you will need, (oh and speakers of course lol or you wont hear them haha) ..........then how to set it up depends a little on what chat program you are using .........msn messenger and yahoo messenger have an 'audio wizard' (under the 'tools' menu) which will walk you thru the process of making sure the mic is working ok etc drcspy (146)

145268 2003-05-18 00:07:00 The problem about getting audio into a PC is the amount of signal most mics with decent fidelity actually actually create and it ain't much whereas a typical soundcard input requires a line level signal which is quite high, like a CD output or somesuch. You can get stuff to do the job with fidelity but its expensive and equals quality usually at least around properly designed audio products but for PC type stuff I can't say as I haven't been there. The cheapest way to do it would be to pick up a reasonable dynamic microphone and a older tape casette with mic inputs and gain controls and run a the line out to your soundcard. artyone (3741)
145269 2003-05-18 00:24:00 Most sound cards/chipsets do provide a "mic" input, as well as a "line" input and a "line" output.

You do need a microphone designed for a PC, a normal "dynamic" mic wont work.

The PC type microphones are "electret" capacitor type, and should work quite easily. They are also quite cheap, consider getting a "headset" microphone/earphone set.

You may find some issues if you have firewall software or hardware, but on a normal dial-up connection with no firewall software running it should be OK.
