145062 2003-05-17 08:31:00 Hi,

I have two PCs connected over a network. The first has Outlook 2k on it, and the other Outlook XP. I wish to move the contacts, emails, and mail settings from the 2k machine to the XP machine.

How?

Thanks!

Erin

145063 2003-05-17 08:57:00 You should find this a breeze.

Open Outlook 2000. From the File menu, select Import and Export.
Choose the option at the top, 'Export to a file'.
Then select 'Personal Folder File (.pst)'.

Then you select which folders you want to move (might even be settings, but I cannot remember), choose a location and name for the file, then finish the Wizard. After this, you can copy the .pst file you made and use the same function in Outlook XP to import the information.

145064 2003-05-18 02:58:00 no agent... this way is the hardest i think, and sometimes it won't work properly as well...

I think this is a good way...
usually, if u previously have installed office 2000 and upgrade to office XP, then you should be able to migrated your files to the new office software

However... if u completly removed ur office 2000 and completely installed office XP, then u should find you old files first...

1. goto dos and type dir *.pst/s/p (unless u have change ur filename, it should have outlook.pst)
2. Note down where is your files
3. Open your Microsoft Office XP
4. Goto file menu --> Open --> Open Data files
5. open the file where u note down as you previously done on step 2
6. and your original file should be open and remain the same before you moved out the program

and one more thing, once you find this file, i would recommend that you actually moved this file out of the default directory, because it is not stored on My Document folder, if u suddenly need to reformat it, you might have a chance that you may lose this file......

this is the other way that i would do, however this is the safest way in regarding about your files...

hope this help

i think if u moved files across the network, u can send it over the network, however that files will be quite big (if u haven't delete anything from there)

if u have a CD writer, it will be easier if u follow the step that i listed above, and transfer to your other computers

145066 2003-05-18 03:54:00 Two things to note Eric: while you can export (and import) your email account settings in Outlook 2k, you can't do this in Outlook XP (don't ask me why they removed this handy feature...) and by coping and importing your PST file (as mentioned above) your Outlook Contacts will automatically be imported (as they are part of the PST file).

One more thing: if you have more than one Contacts folder within Contacts, after importing your PST file you'll need to go into the properties of each extra one and click on "Outlook Address Book-show this folder as an email address book".

145067 2003-05-18 04:01:00 I'm not quite sure how the hell you thought that Office 2000 and Office XP were on the same computer, but suit yourself.

As for the files being too large to go over the network? I would assume these are the only two computers, and that means they have a speed that, minimally, is around 10MB/s. This is plenty of bandwidth to transfer large files quickly and easily.

I think in retrospective, your best bet would be the Windows XP (if you have it) 'Files and Settings Transfer Wizard'. You can locate this in the Start Menu under Accessories/System Tools. It will need to create a disk that you use on the other Windows machine and it can create a collection of your settings and files for transfer to the new computer.

I searched the Microsoft Office website, but could find no Office XP Migration tools, so I then leave you with these links:
www.microsoft.com

145068 2003-05-19 02:45:00 cant imagine why if the person has a network running they would want to write files to a cd to transfer them.......jeez it'd take MUCH longer to do that than transfer them thru a network drcspy (146)
145069 2003-05-19 04:36:00 When you have enough email to fill more than 2 CDs, that might be different however. Sadly, the old laptop does not have a burner, so I shifted all 3Gb over 100Mbits LAN... Painful!

:P
