1338194 2013-04-23 10:28:00 Just reinstalled Vista Home Basic and updated to SP2 and downloaded and installed latest Windows updates. All went fine.

Opened Control Panel -> Programs and Features only to find that it is not responding!

How to get it working?

1338195 2013-04-23 20:52:00 Look in event viewer see what it says. Did you do a clean install?? You didnt use a backup image or something? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1338196 2013-04-23 20:57:00 try this; Click start, type in cmd in the result, right click cmd / run as administrator, type in sfc /scannow Press Enter, let it run, reboot after its finished, see if it works now. wainuitech (129)
1338197 2013-04-23 21:47:00 wainuitech: sfc - Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

Speedy: event viewer - all clean and nice.
Did a recovery from HDD recovery partition - then applied SP1, SP2 and Windows Updates. + MSSE.
It was OK initially as I did go there (programs and features) to remove all those unwanted bloatware before applying SP1, SP2 and updates.

Other than that the system runs sweet as.

Latest Update:

Start windows in Safe Mode and Programs and features works perfectly.

1338198 2013-04-23 22:06:00 Maybe MSSE is causing the problem; but I can't unintstall it without going to Programs and features.

Any other workaround?

1338199 2013-04-23 22:13:00 Ok its something running in the background usually in that case.
Do a clean boot: Click start, type in msconfig open it - ( some of this is copied as Its quicker than me writing)

On the Services tab of the System Configuration dialog box, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box ( bottom Left Corner of window), and then click Disable all. ( see arrows on pic Below)

4951

Apply and reboot. Now try programs and features - if it opens OK, then go back into msconfig, untick "hide All Microsoft services -- then one at a time retick each one and reboot in between ticks. Try programs and features after each reboot. Sooner or later you'll hit the one / Program thats causing th problem.

If it doesn't open in clean boot, look for the Microsoft antivirus and disable that as well, see if its having some sort of effect.

Aint trouble shooting fun :p

Edited, if you want to try MSSE first, then in msconfig, Startup Tab, locate it and untick it.
