1337690 2013-04-20 03:50:00 Help me out guys - I'm smitten with the idea of getting one next week. Currently using a Galaxy Pocket which is all good and fine but mmmm The forthcoming S4 deal will satisfy my soul. It offers:

* Free handset
* 2 GB data per month (carry over each month for a year)
* 700 minutes talk time (carry over each month for a year)
* Unlimited texts
* Bonus 5 gigs data valid for a year

Cost is a contract plan of $119 per month for two years. I'm currently paying $25 per month prepay which is adequate.

What would you do? :drool

1337691 2013-04-20 04:45:00 Not free. Almost 3 grand over the two years. Better to buy out right and stick to some of the prepay bundles plod (107)

Go to a $19 prepay plan and buy it outright..

1337693 2013-04-20 05:39:00 well the total cost of the plan for the two years is $2856 :) On your $25 a month plan you would pay $600 for two years. So the extra cost is $2256 ($94 a month). If you think an S4 and the better plan is worth that much then do it. Otherwise just buy the handset and keep using a cheaper plan. jonovw (16835)

1337695 2013-04-20 09:36:00 that $19 plan is awesome GameJunkie (72)
1337696 2013-04-20 22:53:00 It's something of an annoyance to me that there are no monthly plans that match the value of the $19 prepay options. I use the $19 option on both my vodafone galaxy S3 and my telecom T-stick and would like to switch networks and use the phone for both jobs but the cheapest plan @ $39 only has the same data allowance as one of the $19 options so I lose 500M of data or increase the cost by another $20 to get the same as I get on prepay.

Incidentally I ended up with an S3 because I wanted it but didn't need it :) I got mine from a parallel importer and stuck with prepay. Even if you put an S4 on hp at a chain store and selected one of the cheaper plans it would cost you less over 2 years, if you stick with prepay it's significantly less. Also if any better plans come out in the next 2 years and you own the phone you are free to swap.

Yeah exactly! If you own it outright, then you're free to chop and change things around...

A friend ended up having a major lifestyle change and so the huge amount of minutes on their SGS3 plan were suddenly a massive waste, but they were locked in and unable to change down without paying a relatively large fee. Because they couldn't put that "plan-change fee" on any kind of HP, they were sorta screwed and had to basically stay on paying 4x what they needed to for a monthly amount, just because they got the phone for cheap at the start...

If you own the phone outright, you're free to chop and change phones, along with plans, whenever you like. Another mate of mine got their SGS3 outright, then decided they wanted a Nexus 4 coz they liked the stock Android better. So they sold it, made more than enough to buy the N4 outright, and they're still on the $19 a month plan :D

Provided you're not doing a lot of tethering, or watching videos over 3G, then 500MB is "sufficient" for most basic users getting started with Smartphones. It's all I use, since I've turned Instant Upload to WiFi-only, I come in well under 500MB a month :)

Telecom has a Smart Onebill $19 plan if you have a landline which is the same a the prepay version. Put my wife on it last week..
