2013-04-18 08:20:00 | Recently I've moved into my new house which my parents built and it's on a farm. I originally thought it was going to be great moving in and hoped to see my internet still decent enough to support me and my brother playing online games like SA-MP and Tibia. Much to my surprise I've come across the slowest internet speed I've ever had. I used to get 15mbps download speed at my old house and now it's dropped to an extremely pathetic speed of just 1mbps when it's only me playing online and when my brother gets on boy does it slow down a lot. It's so bad that it drops to like 300kbps which is just stupid in my opinion. We are currently paying $120 a month for 500gb of internet speed and supposed "fastest" internet speed Telecom can provide. I have rang too many times and tried explaining and they even had a technician come down and test it and he was nice and tested it and said it should be coming through at 7mbps and I was so surprised when he said that because in my opinion it's a drastic drop from 7mbps to a measly little 300kbps. Anyway on to the main point, I've currently got 1mbps download speed and only 300kbps when me and my brother are trying to play online which makes up both lag to the extreme where we cannot play at ALL. I do live on a farm and understand I'm a little bit away from the exchange box or whatever they call it but my next door neighbors get perfect internet but I don't think they're with Telecom. I have been considering buying a better router and trying it out as we currently have a 2wire one which Telecom sent out but we've had it for like 5 years or something. I've done so much and I have no viruses on anything and it's my entire household which receives this pathetic excuse for "fast" internet speed. If you have any ideas at ALL, please for the love of god post them below and I'll try it out. P.S - I've been considering changing ISP's but not sure if it's worth it and please keep in mind that although I live on a farm quite a bit from the main exchange or what not where every connection gets hooked up the sub-exchange, if you will, is only about 5 metres from my house and same for my neighbors but they get way faster internet speeds and are not with Telecom.

2013-04-18 09:11:00 | How are you figuring out that you're only getting 1mbps or 300kbps? Line speed in the modem? | wratterus (105) | |
2013-04-18 09:31:00 | ... they even had a technician come down and test it and he was nice and tested it and said it should be coming through at 7mbps... If the Telecom tech tested and got 7Mb/s and the neighbour has good speed, you probably have internal wiring issues. Do you have (or have ever had) a burglar alarm? Have you got in-line filters on ALL your phones? Is there a master splitter and you are plugged into the wrong phone jack?? As Wratterus says, what is the line speed reported by your modem?

2013-04-18 10:03:00 | Not too sure what you mean about the line speed stuff but I've done a speed test and it comes through at 1mbps download and like 0.73 upload speed. Also I have just talked to my neighbor and he's also recently facing drastic drops on his internet speed. No we have not had a burglar alarm and we do have filters on all our phones. Oh and if you mean like what's being put into my modem like the 7mbps, the technician who came tested the internet speed being put into my modem as 7mbps. | Rhymes (17059) | |
2013-04-18 10:35:00 | Re: the master splitter. That means wiring is done so that one jackpoint is for the modem and the others are for the phone. You had anything done to your phone like this? Re: the line speed of modem. Open up your browser and type the following in the address bar, this may work while not knowing what modem you have - what do you have anyway? Type in: 191.168.1.1 Try admin for username and admin for password and in the modem settings menu there should be a line speed that your modem connects at. Let us know your modem so the folks can give you additional info....

2013-04-18 10:36:00 | It's a complicated question, there are a lot of different speeds involved that can affect the final performance. First there is the connection speed from yourself to the cabinet or exchange, this is probably the 7Mbps the technician mentioned and is the maximum speed possible between those two points. You'll never achieve this in download tests but in a perfect world might get as close as 80% of it. Then there is the connection speed from the cabinet to the equipment it's hosted from, this can sometimes also have extra hops involved and can be anywhere from a single 2Mbps connection to a 1Gbps fibre feed. This will limit your speed and is shared with everyone else connected to the cabinet. The more people that connect via the same cabinet the slower they all go. Sometimes this can be upgraded and the ISP should in theory be keeping an eye on it but in some rural areas there is no easy fix. One way you can test this is to try a download in a quiet time like early hours of the morning on a weekday - if it goes faster then it's the shared bandwidth out of the cabinet that's the issue. The extra hop I mentioned is when a cabinet doesn't connect directly to a network router but rather is hosted of another exchange first, in which case again it shares bandwidth with other customers and the loading can affect performance and will change during the day. Finally once you get into the cloud there is the amount of international and local bandwidth the ISP provides shared amongst all it's customers, generally that's not the bottleneck but it's possible. None of this helps you of course, all you can do is try and figure out where the problem is. First try disconnecting everything from the phone line except the modem, if possible don't even use a filter or have any plugged in. Then only have one PC connected and test the speed, preferably at a few different times of day. If this is still slow then it's probably not something you can fix unless the router or your house wiring is the cause. If you can borrow another router give that a try. Next see if you can log onto the router and find the page that gives you connection details. Usually you do this by opening a web browser and putting in the routers IP address (usually 192.168.1.1) and logging in. Default user name and password is usually admin, admin. See if you can find the upstream and downstream connection speeds and post them here. Also the attenuation and signal to noise ratios. After that it's pretty much back to your ISP to see if they can help again.

2013-04-18 10:42:00 | If you know how ... backup the modem settings with the neighbours and borrow theres and put your settings in it and try it at your place .... see if the diff modem gives you better performance .... before you give it back to the neighbour restore the settings so they can get online. Check the modem line speed using the above technique. As for the fastest speed, it is always up to depending on your location, equipment and other factors. Up to as the folks that live in the CBD 10m from the exchange get better results  But to be fair even in Singapore if you paid for 1000 speed, they do gaurantee but that figure is just 30.

2013-04-18 11:41:00 | If you're on a farm and your max speed is 7mbits down, then you're probably on a Conklin DSLAM (www.gpforums.co.nz) (see the third and fourth post down on that link). If your neighbour is getting 7 down then your issue is probably the wiring in your house - unless he's utilising your bandwith.... How old is the farmhouse? Has it been renovated (even if it has, that doesn't necessarily mean anything was done about the phone wiring)? EDIT: Slow broadband is one of the many benefits available to rural dwellers. Not much you can do until the RBI slots in in your area...

2013-04-18 12:07:00 | Yeah it's quite possibly your local cabinet / exchange, depending on where you are. Check out the link at the bottom of my sig, has a few good places to start. Post your line details from the router and we'll go from there. SNR / Attenuation, and "DSL Mode" are what we're after :)

2013-04-18 21:19:00 | You could check-out the "Farmside" site and check their satellite connection costs? I once lived in the country and that was the only way I could get better speeds. Other than satellite you maybe able to get line of sight to a tower. | Bryan (147) | |
