2012-11-17 22:56:00 | Herald on Sunday November 11 Of apocryphal interest, the Herald on Sunday displays its ignorance of protocol by captioning an image of Dr Pita Sharples meeting Prince Charles, saying "Kia ora, your majesty . " Pardon, did I miss something somewhere, but I thought Charles was still a "royal highness?" I can't think Dr Sharples would be so remiss . And pardon me, wasn't November 11 Armistice Day? I couldn't see any mention of it in this low rent rag . Mind you, there was no mention of it in Outlook, so maybe the Editors of Herald on Sunday relied on that . But on to the main gripe: The hot topic of November 11 tells us of a Property Panic . In an article called "In Buyer Straits", wannabe buyers are reported as taking drastic action . . some are even knocking on doors in suburbs where they want to live . Worse, estate agents are even having to work for a living and are posting out personalised letters and cold calling potential sellers! Fast forward to Sunday, November 18 The Property Panic of last week has seemingly done a 180 degree turn according to today's headlines of Sell, Sell, Sell! (My commas - the Herald on Sunday appears to have run out of them . ) Now, in scenes akin to a department store Boxing Day sale (if you believe the Herald on Sunday), homeowners are being trampled in the rush to put their houses on the market . The only reason I've been reading this rag is I've been staying at some friends' house for the weekend and they get the thing delivered (I refuse to buy it) . Next door neighbours wandered in for coffee and to hear my tirade about the quality of the Herald on Sunday . Master 8 and Miss 9 volunteered to do a count of the ratio of adverts to text . At their rough count, there were a total of 26 pages of adverts - 37% (I had to do the math) . Including a further 6 pages of "action" shots of sports "stars", that took the amount of non written text to 46% . I have no idea what the actual ratio of column inch text to visuals and advertising is, but I suspect it's closer to 45% text . Which is why I prefer to say the Herald on Sunday paper is in my opinion, a f*****g pathetic rag . :annoyed: Rant over . I'll get over it . PS Over what? :D

2012-11-17 23:31:00 | On the Herald the one journo I really hate is that Tapu Misa. If I said said anything like the stuff she spouts the Race relations conciliator would prosecute me. Since they have gone tabloidy they have gone downhill, with their stupid attention grabbing headlines but little newsworthy content or stuff we knew anyway. | prefect (6291) | |
2012-11-18 01:54:00 | The columnist I miss the most is the late Frank Haden of the Sunday Star Times. I think he may have crossed swords too many times with the then editor - for telling things as they were. I enjoyed exchanging a few emails with Frank before he passed on. :) Another I respect is Matt McCarten. Although he and I are opposite sides of the fence, he always seems objective with his comments and if the political left needs a kick where it's needed, he delivers. Sadly, Matt has a terminal illness and won't be with us for too long. But still gracious to acknowledge notes to him. And lastly, our esteemed National Treasure, He whose name makes editorial staff wince, He who makes politicians clam up, and He who enjoys upsetting the Business Round Table (just because they can be) ... Sir Robert Jones :clap

2012-11-18 02:26:00 | I agree about Matt Carten his columns have been quite readable. He must have mellowed not too much of that hatred the left wing have about business people and government that supports business. | prefect (6291) | |
2012-11-18 03:49:00 | And this appeared today in the Herald (from the Whale Oil Blog) "They’ve done it again: "Wow, Labour is closing in on Labour in the polls…I knew they were factionalised but not that factionalised." Tagged: Herald Bombs
