1312231 2012-11-18 05:02:00 Didn't have a single call about the Drayteks in the whole 2 months that we were deploying them, before I left. Not a *single* call....could their not get VoIP working? plod (107)
1312232 2012-11-18 05:19:00 Had a lot of issues with SIP not behaving, and NAT problems too. It wasn't an isolated test case, the first two customers we had at this ISP who had those Fritzbox routers swapped out for a Draytek, instant success. From there on out, we just refused to touch them.

Fair enough. Out of interest did you narrow down what the cause was? The guys on GZ love the Fritz, and some of them ain't exactly fools :)

1312233 2012-11-18 08:04:00 Yeah pretty much the VoIP not working properly gave it away. May have been a temporary firmware issue, but whatever, was enough to put me off them :p Chilling_Silence (9)

Hi,

I'm in Blenheim to and would like to know how the fibre connection is going and how long it took for snap to hook you up.

We inquired today and was told it will take 2 weeks to get set up and they cant guarantee that we will get anywhere near 30mb/s and we have a little distribution box right outside our house.

Your information would be great.

Thanks,

1312236 2012-11-19 05:16:00 Correct, you need a new VDSL2 router.

Order a Draytek DV2750n from a snapper.net.nz reseller. They are amazing, flawless quality, very reliable, and you know your ISP isn't just trying to sell it coz they make a truckload of margin on it...

1312237 2012-11-21 16:33:00 I asked Snap why they are selling a VDSL router for use with fibre & they told me that the VDSL part is not used - the routers also have a standard WAN port & Chorus supply a fibre media converter that plugs into the WAN port on the router.
Does anyone know if you can use a standard SIP phone with the Snap VOIP line?

1312238 2012-11-21 18:02:00 That's just stupid then, what a waste given the price of decent VDSL modems. They should be selling something like the TP-Link WR-1043ND. That's what I would do, and run Gargoyle on them, coz it's easy for customers to use...

Yes, you can use a SIP phone or an ATA adapter with Snap.

1312240 2012-11-21 20:23:00 SIP is basically a standard for calling over the internet. Like Skype, but more interoperable.

Gargoyle is an operating system you can put onto some routers. Its reliable and has a simple interface that hides most things people don't need to see. It'd be perfect for mass deployment to consumers.

The TP-Link WR-1043ND is a physical device that you can run Gargoyle on. It's cheap but well built, and would be excellent in a UFB situation.

Finally, an ATA adapter is an "Analog Telephone Adapter", basically let's you use your old phones with SIP.
