Can you update androids to a higher version and should ya? Are you likely to get a crash and phone only use as a brick afterwards?

1313200 2012-11-18 21:34:00 Cyanogen Mod is your friend if you want to upgrade and your carrier hasn't yet pushed it out.

Having said that, the first time I ran it I was worried that I'd brick the phone. Procedure is not entirely "user-friendly", but if you can edit your registry and upgrade firmware ... it's pretty doable. Just expect to run around to about five different sites checking that you have the right version of everything and the right order in which to do things.
