1312330 2012-11-16 01:50:00 A little pricey but I don't disagree entirely. Who really cares what they buy with it? It stays in the department. At least it's not going to fund their own personal expenses. The Error Guy (14052)
1312331 2012-11-17 10:08:00 This is an emotive topic but here are some thoughts.

In order to cremate people in nz, the government requires extra steps to be taken. This involves filling out some forms as well as examining the body to identify it and ensure that it contain a pacemaker which can explode in cremation furnaces. The notes must then be examined by another doctor to act as a backup for accuracy.

If this is all done by hospital staff, different hospitals have different policies. Some absorb all the money and it falls into the hospital coffers others give it to a doctor staff fund which are used for various things so that no individuals benefit personaly. Ie doctors working in baby wards vrs intensive care will cremate fewer people.

A similar thing happens when evidential blood alcohol tests are taken in a+e when there is no police surgeon.

While you can argue about whether hospital doctors should get a fee as they are employees and completing forms could be seen as part of your job description, GP's certainly do as completing the forms, reviewing notes and traveling to see bodies takes time and a fee is not unreasonable.

The funeral home also gets a fee for the cremation certificate.

1312332 2012-11-17 23:15:00 These cremation certificate fees, if charged, are fee that is charged to people who are suffering a loss at the time. These people should not be taken advantage of so that Sky TV for doctors or social clubs can be funded. If the charge is made it should go to the hospital coffers

A term I have often heard is 'slush fund'. A lot of firms have a slush fund which is usually derived from the sale of recycled waste material. This often goes toward the social club. Usually this would have management approval.

1312333 2012-11-18 12:25:00 Really, this is populist small minded stuff. As I said earlier, try cremating granny yourself.

But beyond that, the major expense is the funeral for which the same grieving people willingly pay $8 - 10k these days. So it seems a pitiful complaint to reject a doctor's fee for a necessary certificate while happily paying 100X as much for the ceremony.

What rubbish .

It has nothing to do with cremating Granny yourself .

It is not about Doctors in Private practice charging for their services .

It’s about Doctors employed by the DHB’s who are already paid for mountains of form-filling, running a little swindle to bolster their Social Club funds .

The fact that the DHB’s involved have stopped the swindle speaks for itself .
