1312221 2012-11-16 22:35:00 Thanks Chill. Here is what I would get if I go with Snap UFB:

Up to 30Mbit/s download
Up to 10Mbit/s upload
50GB data per month
Snap Plus VOIP phone line
Zero-rated data to iSky and Quickflix (doubt if we would use this)

The download speed would probably be better than the 11 - 15 mbps I get now with Slingshot, but this is not certain.

The upload speed should definitely be better than the 1 mbps I get now.

Now have 20 Gb with Slingshot.

Same cost as Slingshot, $75/month.

Just rang Snap. A modem costs :( $345. A free modem is given with a 24 month plan
BUT to cancel the plan at any stage the cost is the monthly fee for every  month cancelled.

If I could be sure of a 100% phone connection via Voip, I would probably go with the 24 mo plan.
Not thrilled about having the phone cut off when the internet goes out.

1312224 2012-11-17 04:40:00 Bugger that, AFAIK for UFB (Fibre) you can use pretty much any WiFi AP. If it's VDSL2 then it's not true UFB and they're lying, in which case you'd *hope* they're going to sell you a *nice* Draytek and not some shitty ass Thomson router that even Telstra have now admitted DOESN'T work well at all and only use it as a bridge to another Wireless AP.

Also, cheap UPS will set you back $80-ish, grab that if you're really worried :)

1312225 2012-11-17 04:50:00 OK just looked into it, with Snap for $345 they'll be selling you VDSL2 and a FRITZ!Box. DONT get that router, they're nasty themselves.

I worked a 3 month contract for an ISP at the start of the year, several users tried to "BYO" and use them coz they're cheap as to import them, but it just ended in requiring huge amounts of support, and nothing but tears for the users.

Well, you are going to love this: When I rang yesterday the Snap sales guy said that the $345 Fritzbox was a great price  because it was heavily discounted. He also said not to use anything else.

I don't like the idea of getting hooked into a 2 year :groan: contract - which has a HUGE cost for early termination.

If I have the terminology correct, the ADSL+2 modem that I have now will not work and I need a VDSL2 unit. But if I get a different VDSL2 modem (at a decent price) I doubt if Snap would offer any support. So I guess I will be staying with Slingshot, which is OK except for the AWFUL woman's voice they use for accessing phone messages.

1312227 2012-11-18 01:32:00 Correct, you need a new VDSL2 router.

Order a Draytek DV2750n from a snapper.net.nz reseller. They are amazing, flawless quality, very reliable, and you know your ISP isn't just trying to sell it coz they make a truckload of margin on it...

1312228 2012-11-18 01:48:00 You are the first person I have seen say Fritzboxes are no good. Ive seen some people buy better models from AU, but other than they they seem to get awesome reviews. If you go for another router don't expect snap or who ever to be able to help if it all goes pear shaped. I'm a fan of draytek my self, but I don't think the fritz boxes are as bad as you make out.

Looks like they dish out the 7340 normally or you can get the 7390 for around $400.

1312229 2012-11-18 04:51:00 Norton gets good reviews too. ;) R2x1 (4628)
1312230 2012-11-18 04:52:00 Had a lot of issues with SIP not behaving, and NAT problems too. It wasn't an isolated test case, the first two customers we had at this ISP who had those Fritzbox routers swapped out for a Draytek, instant success. From there on out, we just refused to touch them.

Didn't have a single call about the Drayteks in the whole 2 months that we were deploying them, before I left. Not a *single* call....
