1312211 2012-11-13 07:42:00 So last week i decided to bite the bullet and go for a fibre connection at home. was on vodafone paying 110 p/m for 80 gig etc etc. have gone with snap fibre,30 down and 10 up 75 p/m +$5 p/m for unlimited youtube, should keep kid sorted! 50 gig will be plenty so am not to worried about drop in cap. guys from chorus turned up monday to do install, we are the forth house in Blenheim to get it installed, i have the the longest run (800m) from roadside box. seems to be a bit of a learning curve for chorus but all going well. will be interesting to do he ping comparo's tomorrow when its up and running. currently getting around 8mb/s and bing of around 40ms, guy recons i will get 30 all day long, no drop at peak times and ping of about 4m/s.
this should be awesome, and cheaper than copper network. will touch base again tomorrow and let you all know how it went!

1312215 2012-11-13 08:11:00 VoIP in many cases can be a better quality than standard telephony, if done correctly :) Chilling_Silence (9)

1312217 2012-11-16 04:10:00 Hi,

I'm in Blenheim to and would like to know how the fibre connection is going and how long it took for snap to hook you up.

We inquired today and was told it will take 2 weeks to get set up and they cant guarantee that we will get anywhere near 30mb/s and we have a little distribution box right outside our house.

Your information would be great.

Thanks,

1312218 2012-11-16 04:17:00 Are chorus doing it?? (http://www.chorus.co.nz) I think theyre doing it here too. The cabinet is around the corner here. I would check their site

Thy've been laying cables for probably the last 2-3 weeks. And just finished the cabinet last last/this week

So how is Voip?

I have the Snap offer on my desk (my street is one of the first to get UFB) but have been delaying a decision because of uncertainly about Voip quality/reliablility.

Also not sure how much of a speed increase there will be as I would get the Snap cheapest option and now have 1 - 15 mbs download on Slingshot.

1312220 2012-11-16 20:51:00 VoIP is only as reliable as your internet. If your internet is reliable, then fantastic.
NZ has been "soured" as such with a plethora of shitty routers from ISPs, and that's where I've found 4/5 issues regarding VoIP quality arise.

Also, having a semi-decent upload helps, means that when your significant other decides to upload a few photos to Facebook that it doesn't pwn your voice quality (Again, as most home / small business routers don't do any decent QoS).
