| 145674 | 2003-05-19 06:26:00 | Is the XP upgrade merely installed over the top of my current (ME) operating system? What are the negatives to just going the upgrade way as apposed to a full XP Home install - backing up data etc and then clean intalls of my other software? (I know there is a price difference between the two packages.) TIA Chris |

Some people have no problems at all with upgrades whether it be XP or ME, others seem to have no end of problems. Upgrading can sometimes confuse the system with files of the same name, files on the upgrade that may be older than what you already have, imcompatible files such as dll's etc. From my experience I find that a clean install with all the hassles of backing up, reformatting, downloading updates etc is usually less painful than a upgrade. With WinME upgrade and I think with the 98se upgrade, if you already had a upgrade disk, you could 'fool' the OS into thinking it was installing as a upgrade when it fact you were doing a full install, someone may know if you can do this with a XP upgrade. |

There is also a program you can run (Compatability Wizard) that will identify all non compliant hardware and which software packages will work OK, which you need to reinstall. If your PC only has "recovery CD's" for the original OS (or worse still no CD's) you will find a problem exists if you need to do a clean install again down the track. You need to reinstall ME and start from scratch. If you have a real ME CD (upgrade or full) then you can just "show" it to the program when it asks for it. I would go for a clean install, but I have done one upgrade only and it was OK. |

Prolly a 20 percent difference on performence over the 2.Of course, this only applies to my machine and is dependent on the state of the os i was upgrading and the harddrive.... Besides,Is there anything out there more satisfying then a format and fresh install?.... |

At the moment XP is very buggy & you will be applying a lot of windows updates/Security patches, & maybe a SP as well. Also It is a BIG step up from Win Me e.g. How it look e.g. layout, How it works etc..etc ** Goes off & hides in a corner of his room :D ** |

Imo Me is the biggist piece of fluff ever made, but as you say,if ya dig it,whose anyone else to care? |

| 145680 | 2003-05-21 23:09:00 | Thanks for the responses to my querry. I'm inclined to go the full install - backup, reformat etc. My ME Os has it's 'moments' but a full registry clean out might help. Cheers Chris |
