145575 2003-05-19 00:14:00 I'm looking to buy a CD writer and a DVD ROM.
I'd be interested to hear any recommendations you guys (and gals) have.
Perhaps you could direct me to any websites that do comparison reviews.
I've found a few myself but I'm a little uncertain about the quality of the review.
Some seem to push a particular brand. Others seem a little dated.
Your opinions are appreciated

TIA

145576 2003-05-19 01:11:00 DVD ROMs I would go with one that doesn't limit the amount of times you can view DVDs from different Regions, or get one that you can flash with a 'hacked bios' so that you can view DVDs from any region without worrying about limitations.

CDWriters, I have had no problems with Acer, BTC or Ricoh and they are exceptionally good, there are others that are reasonably ok. Try and get one with a lot of Cache as it adds better performance for faster writers. 4MB+ is good.

145577 2003-05-19 01:12:00 My person opinion is that even though there are DVD/CDRW combo drives available, stick with separate drives. The DVD can act as your CD, and it makes it much easier if you intend to copy from CD to CD.

Personally, I'd go with Sony for both DVD and CDRW if you're copying CD to CD. Sony DVD's are around $115, and CDRW Retail Kits are about $215 (Exc GST).

If you're generally going to be copying from HDD, or you have space issues, something like an AOpen DVD/CDRW (COM-4012) are about $160, which is pretty good value. I don't recall having ever had a problem with any AOpen h/w.

I'm sure someone will disagree though.... :) Whatever you buy, make sure it has a decent warranty (2 years or more).

145578 2003-05-19 02:05:00 Depends what you are looking for. The Pioneer DVD-117 can be made region free and I think can be found for around $100 + GST... maybe cheaper by now.

The Asus writer is a brilliant writer which has never failed me no matter what the task. Good speeds, and correct EFM encoding. If you don't know what that means, then chances are you prob won't need it. Either way, it is available for under $100 + GST for a 48X - 52X now.

Cheers,

Lo.
