2003-05-18 21:01:00 | Oh what lovely day in Auckland today, I have to walk to work, not quite 2 hours, just to fix some heap of crap TV or VCR, I was thinking since I have to walk, why don't I become a Postie? And get some job satisfaction, the mail must go through Take all the the programs on all the the free to air stations, if they were on sky would you pay for it? I DON'T THINK SO, Even TV1 News is a load of rubbish now, Last year I used to leap out of bed and watch the 6am news (unless I was up already and making a Press F1 posting) now it is just ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ material . I better go or I will be late for my first moaning customer .

2003-05-18 21:39:00 | I have a friend who is a postie . He sometimes works nights as a professional musician, and his wife works as well . They live modestly in the suburbs, and manage to make ends meet . What does that tell you about the wages of a postie? . Clueless

2003-05-18 23:53:00 | Do you mean you would like to deliver mail on the way to work and in between fixing crapy compus?Don't think the post office works like that, but not sure.Wages would be about 25 large is my guess for a full time job. | Thomas (1820) | |

2003-05-19 02:17:00 | Hi E . ric Apart from the "all weather" aspects of the job, a postie's day doesn't just consist of delivering mail . They start early to sort their own mail walk (don't know why it is called a walk, probably dates back to a more leisurely age) and can include a second walk if someone is away . You are usually based in one area only though . AFAIK, once your deliveries are finished the rest of the day is your own, but since you are being paid . Transport is provided :^O but you have to take it back when you finish so you can't just go home, and the boss could probably ask you to do more work up until your normal finish time . Wages are not that bad though, the exercise keeps you fit and some Posties have second jobs to boost their disposable income so financially it can be a reasonable occupational choice . Final mail sorting to walk level is done in local post offices so you could try asking the local manager or ring the Victoria St sorting centre for information . Cheers Billy 8-{)

2003-05-19 02:22:00 | Forgot to mention: Sorting a walk is called "throwing up" your mail . :p This is partly because with experience it really is thrown into the various boxes, but the mental imagery is somewhat challenging . Cheers Billy 8-{)

2003-05-19 07:59:00 | Hi All My posting was more to have a dig at my old trade than to learn about a new job. Like my advice to school students is DO YOU HOMEWORK NOW!!!, never get into a "fix it" industry.

Try telling that to Lawyers, Dentists, Doctors, Vets and a raft of other "fix it" professions. I guess the message is: Choose your "fix it" career carefully, and deal only with technology that evolves very slowly, like the human race for example. ;) Cheers Billy 8-{) :D |
