145623 2003-05-18 13:11:00 I have just installed Linux Red Hat 8.0 on a seperate partition on my 2nd hard drive. The installation succesfully detected most of my peripherals including my creative labs soundblaster Live! soundcard.

However though it has detected it I can't get any sound! ):
Any suggestions?

Thnaks in advance.

145624 2003-05-18 22:05:00 Do you also have OnBoard sound?

I have onboard AC '97 and a SB!Live 5.1 channel card.

I wanted to use the SB!Live so I disabled the onboard AC '97 and rebooted twice... just to make sure that the SB!Live was default.

After that I re-enabled sound and told it to do nothing with the AC '97.

you can also try the following:
# su -
password:
# sndconfig
Now, as root, running sndconfig will bring up the sound configuration utility, that may help you out also :-)

Cheers

145625 2003-05-18 23:04:00 if its detected, in gui mode kde/gnome u should see the mixer or volume control.

in some cases, the volumes are all muted by default. u need manually toggle it to test. there is a little button at the end of each volume control bar.
if you use an audio cd to test, u can change the master volume, wave volume, and cd volume, pay attention to the mute button.

good luck

145626 2003-05-19 01:23:00 It shoudl work. :D Sometimes you have to actually start the sound server. Graham L (2)
145627 2003-05-19 02:20:00 What do you mean by "start the sound server"? lardass (262)
145628 2003-05-19 05:50:00 I've only briefly played with this and it was a long time ago ... but I had to start the 'server' which manages sound. I think it was an early version of alsa, so I suppose it was called "alsad", the "d" at the end meaning it's a daemon, which just sits there, waiting for someone to want to use it. :D

Have a look in /etc/init.d to see if there's a script there to start/stop it. I would have though that the new GUIs would have atiomated that ... check out the HOWTO files on alsa, anmd sound. Try "apropos sound" and "apropos alsa" to see what help there is loaded on your system.

145629 2003-05-19 11:20:00 Wait a second.. You wouldnt be trying to play MP3's thru XMMS by any chance would you?

For XMMS you MUST download the plugin for MP3 playback, just search google for 'xmms mp3 rpm download' and you should be fine.

BTW - I use OSS for my driver :-)
