2003-05-19 10:44:00 | Hi all I've installed Outlook 97 after years of using OE (still am) because I want to set up/use its contact management capabilities and look at some add ons for the same purpose. OS is win2k SP3. Connection is by lan and adsl. My problem is I can't see where to set up accounts, enable identities or do much else. There is no option in Tools> Services for Internet Mail (just MSMail which looks like the w95 version, Yuk). I do have a profile named Outlook in Tools> Options> but again not much else of use to my inexperienced eye. I did set up Exchange and MSfax, MSmessaging after I enabled Outlook, was this a mistake. The hole setup looks very clunky and win 95ish and not the smooth, vaguely familiar operation I envisaged. Oh, and I have set Outlook as default email program in IE properties. An alternative would be to use the email client or OE thru a CRM app, but I would rather have a play with outlook and whatever add on app suits before going out and paying big bucks for a CRM. Thanks for your time. Looking forward to being able to send & receive. Cheers Murray P ?:|

With this highlighted click on Properties Fill in the fields and Apply Click on Advanced Options and fill in the SMTP server address and OK Click on Connection Tab, and set your connection type. |

2003-05-19 21:22:00 | Hi Jim Internet mail is not in the list for selection. I suspect its more an Exchange Server error, but stand to be corrected. The following error messages occur at start up of Outlook. Microsoft Exchange Network problems are preventing you from connecting to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer. Please contact your System Administrator. Microsoft Exchange The action could not be completed. Then the General properties box come up for MS Exchange and then: Microsoft Exchange Upload of changes could not take place. Could the order I installed Outlook, Exchange, etc, have mucked it up? The help file are no use, they just say contact your system admin. Guess who (save comments for later publication please :8} I have saved the few addresses I have entered and will wack the whole lot and reinstall sarting with exchange, its wm32 right? Thanks Murray P

2003-05-19 22:18:00 | Hi Have deleted Outlook and MSmail but the options remain the same as above. If I could find a Help item in Windows or Office I might be able to do something but, there is nothing on internet mail or exchange server which is very frustrating. Remember extracting files to set up fax on win98 but don't remember where I stored those files, if I have them. Would that work for setting up exchange server and Internet mail? WorK! | 145740 | 2003-05-20 00:15:00 | Sorry Murray I am not familiar with Exchange Server. I found this info which might help. You have to go into the Control Panel and open Mail (or Mail & Fax) to set up Internet Mail in Outlook 97. In Mail, Click on "Show Profiles" then select "Add". When setting up your new service, select "Internet Mail" and follow the prompts. Make sure you set Outlook to use the new profile as the default. There is also an update enhancement patch which can be downloaded Here (office.microsoft.com) which you may not have as Outlook 97 had a lot of problems.

2003-05-21 02:02:00 | Hi Jim Tried to post a reply yesterday but, F1 was going loopy. Now where were we.... Kicked Outlook & Windows Messaging =exchange. (If I remember right, exchange was changed when 98 came out and lost the fax option which you could still load by exploring the 98 cd. Think 98 version must be much improved on 95/O97 ver). Downloaded the patch you suggested, reloaded above apps from Office97 cd, applied patch and after a few minor saggles managed to get the correct options visible in Control Panel> Mail (there were profiles and Internet mail and all that stuff, very exciting). Set up a couple of accounts and tested ok after an initial Outlook freeze (more a stall). Things have got from reasonable to bad to worse since tho. Outlook will lock on most occasion if any menu item is selected eg, Tools > Services or sometime if you just click the menu. I also found that the program selection option in IE properties only showed Outlook, a takeover had occurred. All in all I think Outlook97 stinks and it will be gone for good shortly. Options are to upgrade to a newer ver of Office but, this seems to be an expensive exercise to get a contact manager. I'm looking at ACT and Goldmine CRM software but looks like I'll have to take a bit of corporate complexity to get what I want which is: an intergrated contact manager with time tracking, email, contact management with notes and links. Not much! Got any ideas. Cheers Murray P
