145798 2003-05-19 12:24:00 I have a list of different computer program cleaners / virus scanner / mail checkers etc
are most of these programs compatable with each other?
if not what will throw a spanner in the works?

AVG, Mailwasher, Ad aware, zone alarm, the cleaner,
( nortons- uninstalled), msn, yahoo, trillian - messenger, ?
(spybot - uninstalled)

or is there unknown information about this?

this is mainly out of interest to see if this unknown problem may be causing me strife unbeknown to me.

all input welcomed

145799 2003-05-19 12:38:00 on another note what sort of things does zonealarm watch?

what is port 137 ?

and does zonealarm affect messaging ?

and if every minute it says alert ( for the same port ) what would a common thing ? program be trying to access my computer?

145802 2003-05-19 21:16:00 I have and use AVG, AdAware, Trillian and Spybot without any problems whatsoever .

I tried Mailwasher and while it is very good I think I can manage my spam quite well without it so uninstalled it after a short trial .

Used ZoneAlarm in the past, had problems with it so changed to something better . It has probably improved since then but I am happy with what I have now .

None of those programs (with the possible exception of ZoneAlarm), if set up and managed correctly, will cause you any strife .

I believe that any problems you have with your computer is due to "user error" not conflicts between those programs (forgive me for being so blunt! :p) . Computers only know what they are programmed to do and anything "done wrong" is going cause a little or big hiccup that can, and often does, turn into a major hiccup somewhere along the way as things start snowballing . Installing and then incorrectly uninstalling programs is one way to cause "hiccups" that catch up with you further down the line .

It is very easy to get a computer into a bit of a mess, especially when one is fairly new to computers, so don't beat yourself up about that . Unfortunately, getting one out of a mess requires quite a bit of computer knowledge and physical access to the sick machine . :|

145803 2003-05-19 23:06:00 LOL

well said and yes i looked up the port 137 but still am lost as to what could be constantly trying to conect to my computer.

and yes i beleive most of what happens to the computer is operator trouble........LOL
human error is a big thing isnt it but we dont always admit that.
i am not haveing any problems with most of my programs just that intriging mailwasher problem but everything still works fine.

thanks all

no offense, and none taken.

but if people dont ask we dont learn do we?
always forget to look up a lot of simple things on google not knowing the range of googles knowledge so to speak.

145805 2003-05-20 00:59:00 Port 137 is the network browsing port. If that's blocked then Shared files/printers will not work as well as blocking all computers on the network to that PC. Kame (312)
145806 2003-05-20 02:23:00 Hi beetle

When ZA logs a new port request it throws up the warning and gives you an option to check what it is all about . If you see that it is ok to allow that port access then you tick ok and the option to not notify again and you won't be bothered anymore .

ZA goes through this learning process from first installation but after a while you hever hear from it again unless something nasty tries to get in .

IMHO most of the problems users have with ZA are due to not reading the manual properly . (Sorry Susan :8}) The program offers a wealth of information about what is blocked and what is not, and even obscure file names will give you a description of the program they belong to so that you know you are not allowing nasties to stuff your system .

The only gripe I have is that blocking "mime type integrated objects" under mobile code control stops certain pages of some PDF files from downloading and you get a "not authorised to access" message .

I have had no other problem .

Cheers

That is what Press F1 is here for . :-)

> always forget to look up a lot of simple things on google not knowing the range of googles knowledge so to speak .

Google has links to just about anything you want to know and having a go at looking things up for yourself is a good habit to get into . The hardest part is dreaming up the correct search terms but when you find what you are after it is very satisfying . If you can't find what you want or things are too technical there are always people here happy to explain .

I don't think Beetle has her computer networked - as far as I know it is a stand-alone computer .

Beetle, have you been scanning for viruses with an up-to-date anti-virus program? One of the references that I found on Google regarding activity on Port 137 was due to a worm . Hopefully someone else may have more ideas or reassurance that it is of no cause for alarm .

> IMHO most of the problems users have with ZA are due to not reading the manual properly . (Sorry Susan)

Meh! Manuals are for wusses! :p :D

Nah, the problems I had with ZoneAlarm were to do with True Vector something or other that played merry havoc with my old Win 98 computer . I had no problems with lack of access to the web nor grumbles about too many alerts, etc . Uninstalling and reinstalling did not improve things and I got so fed up with the crashes that it got the boot - permanently . Outpost was better behaved and had lots of nice features, and now Kerio does the job nicely .

As usual, it is Horses for Courses, Billy . :-)
