146280 2003-05-21 09:22:00 Time to upgrade. Need to do the ff: 1. transfer home movies to DVD / VCD - some editing reqd, 2. touch up digital photos, 3. play last year's games

Thinking of P4 2.6G 533fsb, 60GB, 512MB, Ti4200 64ME, maybe a digitizer/penpad, W2000

Where will the bottleneck be? Do I need more ram, vidram, speed, hdd, etc?

Thanks
Tom

146281 2003-05-21 09:51:00 At the price it is today I would deffinately go for more ram as 512mb may seem a lot but when playing with photos it is easily gobbled up. mikebartnz (21)
146282 2003-05-21 10:33:00 I agree with mikebartnz , and ensure drive is 7400rpm and not 5400rpm. It makes a noticeable difference. Pheonix (280)
146283 2003-05-21 11:10:00 Thanks, guys. Yup, hd is 7200rpm - is 80 GB ok for 1-1.5hr movies? Tom McB (832)
146284 2003-05-21 11:18:00 If you're doing lots of editing, then you'll thank yourself later for going with 120 gig or the likes.. for an extra $60 odd, its probably worth it!

The RAM, I can agree on.. at todays prices an extra 256MB DDR RAM will set you back a little over $50, so go for the extra RAM.

7200rpm sounds good too....

Only thing I can think of is how you're going to get the video to your PC?

146285 2003-05-21 11:33:00 I was thinking of getting one of those PCI cards with RCA sockets to plug a VCR into. Friend of mine has one from Belkin, can't remember tho how it hooks up to his PC - I think it's a USB device. Says the whole process takes ages - is that right?

I'll be getting a digital video cam later on, so I might be plugging in a firewire card. For now, I'll be doing media xfers from VHS to DVD/VCD with some editing out, fades, menus, etc. USB2.0 should be ok unless somebody thinks I should get the firewire sooner in which case how do I hook up analog vhs to it?

Do I get any benefits out of 128MB on the Ti4200 instead of 64MB?

Cheers

146286 2003-05-21 21:56:00 As an example, a typical movie in DVD format takes up around 5-8GB.

Uncompressed 90 minute PAL video, @ 600x800 pixels per frame, 23fps, 24bit colour requires around 170GB of hard disk space.

The key problem in getting your data from VCR to PC is the data transfer, to be able to do it in real time would require roughly 32,000 MBs of data. To do it properly, you buy a special VCR which has a feedback loop from the computer so that it automatically pauses frequently to allow the computer to catch up when it has too much information.

Otherwise you have to manually stop and start the tape which doesnt work so well.

146287 2003-05-22 03:23:00 Hmmmm..... Haven't thought about that, Iain.

I suppose I'll have a go at the pause/resume process since most of my videos have fade outs and gaps in between anyway.

Anybody know of useful links?

Regards
Tom
