| 146288 | 2003-05-21 07:17:00 | Okay, here's my first two things that Ive been waiting to let loose with: Win2K... If just re-installed it on the Gateway/Family PC so now we're doing a Dual-Boot with Win2K and WinXP, with XP still as default. Now, both have exactly the same users setup and all, same case, same password... But.. In WinXP, Its happy with a shared drive being Read Only. Win2K is not! Currently all my shares are set as Read Only (Sharing Music as one.. Setup's and Install files is another... CD Images x2 is another share) so that the other computer geniuses-to-be in the family cant go deleting the data. So, WinXP is happy, Win2K isnt... Why and how can I fix it? Next up: Login scripts. I want to make a script that will automatically map Network Drives across a LAN. I know where to specify the script (I think.. In the user's properties if you Manage My Computer.. then Local Users and Groups.. then Users.. then the Users Properties.. :-)) but I dont know how to write a script. Thanks Chilling_Silence |

| 146289 | 2003-05-21 09:07:00 | The script is the easy and fun part! (don't you just love Dos?). Try this: @echo off cls echo.Notification @net use l: \\ComputerName\folder This is pretty straight foward - Just change notification to something like "Setting Up Shared Network Services" or "Mapping Home Path" or something like that - it can be anything - this is what gets displayed while mapping the homepath. However - keep the . between Echo and Notification Then, believe it or not, just change ComputerName to the name of your computer, and FolderName to the name of the shared folder, and bob's your uncle! Just copy and Paste it into Notepad (with the changes), save as a .BAT file (NETLOGON.BAT is a popular name for some reason) and that's it... Our school used to use scripts like this to setup shared services, somehow my filthy little hands got hold of the script and here it is! [pre]@echo off cls echo.[++] Syncronising Clock @net time \\STPETERS /y /set echo.[++] Mapping Users Home Directory @net use E: \\STPETERS\%u echo.[++] Setting Up Start Menu @net use X: \\STPETERS\startmenu (the start menu used to be a folder that loaded off the network server) The [++] is just there for athstetic looks I think.. Looks pretty cool when it's all loading together though :D... If you want to get really good, just drop in the Syncronising Clock lines into your Network scripts - on each logon the clock on the local computer get's syncronised with a clock on you network... No real point in this, but it's more fun to watch than just one Bat file going through... CyberChuck |

| 146291 | 2003-05-21 11:10:00 | Thanks CyberChuck, I'll look to doing that tonight :-) *Saves page for offline reference* Now.. to coplicate the R/W Access situation.. The PC hosting the network drives is running Win2K and RedHat 8. The PC trying to connect (The Client in this case which is actually my internet Gateway) is now running Win2K and WinXP. When the Host (My PC... AMD1700).. When AMD1700 is running Win2K, Win2K on the Gateway (P933mhz, and yes.. I need to think up some slightly more interesting names..) will not work with the Read-Only shares. It can list the folder contents, but not execute the EXE files nor play the MP3's. Same share across SMB in Linux (RedHat 8) on AMD1700 (Ive setup PC name and shares the same.. with Read Only flags set) and P933Mhz in Win2K AND XP has absolutely no problems reading it! When AMD1700 is in Win2K though, and P933Mhz is running Win2K, it throws a wobbly at the Read-Only shares! Wow, what a mouthful! Can anybody lend a hand.. suggestions? Cheers Chilling_Silence |
