2003-05-22 21:17:00 My computer running Win. 98 (SE?) Turns itself off half way through startup. When restart it suggests safe mode which does work. But scandisk won't work because something "Windows" is writing in the background. What to do? Bumfluff Bumfluff (3523)
2003-05-22 21:46:00 How long has your computer been stalling during startup? Have you installed any new programs recently or upgraded any hardware?

Run scandisk from safe mode.

2003-05-22 23:05:00 Susan, thanks for taking the trouble, the computer has stalled just once, that is this morning. The only thing I have upgraded in the last day or so was my virus files.I was running scan disk from safe mode because safe mode was the only mode in which I could get a screen up. It still wouldn't work. However this seems to have been a typical Windows hissy fit, as when I got home to check for replies, the start-up went pretty perfectly. However if you do have any ideas I would like to hear them still, as I don't want this to happen again. Just wish I can afford a Mac.regards Bumfluff Bumfluff (3523)
2003-05-22 23:39:00 Antivirus up to date? Do you use anti-spyware such as Spybot? Download a program called regclean (can search on google). This can sometimes fix registry problems that other programs won't. Only suitable for win95/98. Pheonix (280)

2003-05-23 05:19:00 Press F8 when you first see Win98 starting or what ever it is and from the menu start in MSDos mode and run scandisk from there and if it isn't something more serious all should be well. mikebartnz (21)
