147269 2003-05-25 01:40:00 The graphics have gone screwed on my computer. I have an MSI Geforce 4 (8867), and i read that is best to use MSI drivers. Using the Live Update 2 from MSI, they tell me to download drivers 41.09.

I want to get a later version than this, so would ther be anything wrong with me using the drivers from NVIDIA, to get the later version?

147270 2003-05-25 01:54:00 Should be just fine. If it doesn't like them you can always go back (back up your existing config). Dont forget to delete your currnt settings and load the standard vga drivers before changing to the Nvidia ones.

147271 2003-05-25 04:07:00 Video card vendors always tell you to use their own drivers and this usually isn't necessary - if you want the latest drivers for speed over stability go with the NVIDIA reference drivers (DETONATOR) - the MSI ones will be older but proven by time to be more stable.

Like Muzzer said - make sure you UNINSTALL the old drivers first and reboot (it will look really bad until you install the new drivers and reboot)!

Also - you should try to open (not install) the new driver pack before uninstalling the old drivers as speaking from experience you may get bad (corrupted) downloads of the DETONATOR drivers and it is a major pain to navigate your PC in 640x480 16colour mode (especially on big monitors)

147272 2003-05-25 04:12:00 Thanks.
But doesnt MSI add there own little thing to it or something? To make it go with thier model or something?

147273 2003-05-25 04:18:00 The MSI drivers will be optimised to run on a MSI board but the performance difference will not be noticable and the majority of boards are extremely similar to the NVIDIA reference.

The latest drivers from NVIDIA will be a lot faster than the latest MSI drivers as MSI will take longer to update their site (probably).

I run a Gainward Ti4600 128MB Golden Sample card and have always used the latest DETONATOR drivers without problems - the only exception to that was with one release I had trouble maintaining refresh rates but that is another story :D
