147629 2003-05-26 08:53:00 OK... just a quick question... picked one of these up, and was wondering... it shows up as a removable disk in explorer... right clicking it gives the option to format it...

Now when I select it, it gives me the option to format it, but also change it from Fat32 file structure to NTFS... is this safe?? Just wondering if it will let me do it, and if so, whether I could fit more data on it...???

Slightly confused...

147630 2003-05-26 08:59:00 Yes you can . (The following is direct from the Web)

Just be aware that when you format your USB memory drive with NTFS, you will lose a portion of its memory to the format file that NTFS uses .

For example, on an 8MB memory drive, you may lose more than 1MB to the files that NTFS will place on it .
Or on a 128MB memory drive, you may lose up to 8MB to NTFS files .

Before formatting, be sure that you are willing to lose this space to NTFS .

147631 2003-05-26 09:00:00 Anyway I can do a quick calculation to figure out if it's worth it?? Lohsing (219)
147632 2003-05-26 09:09:00 Well, I thought the posting above was clear enough?

Its a while since I went to school but 256 MB vs 240 MB shouldn't be too hard to figure out?

256 MB = 256 MB = FAT32
256 MB - 16 MB = 240 MB = NTFS.

But, factor in the block sizes of the data to be stored, it may (or may not) alter the amount you lose.
If you know the file size of every file that is, but its highly unlikely you will know in advance.

147633 2003-05-26 10:16:00 Actually, it only ever showed 247mb free... after formatting to NTFS, it lost 1mb I think?

But I know what you mean.

Cheers for that!

147634 2003-05-26 11:24:00 hmm I can only use FAT and FAT32 on my 128meg drive. Unless I use another OS. -=JM=- (16)
147635 2003-05-26 11:37:00 Oh ok... well, I'm only using Win2K Pro as an OS... maybe that's it?? Lohsing (219)
147636 2003-05-26 12:19:00 Either that or it can't format in NTFS on a 128meg disk. -=JM=- (16)
147637 2003-05-26 12:21:00 Seems wierd how you wouldn't be able to format into NTFS just because it is 128mb...?!

147638 2003-05-26 12:57:00 If you are wanting it to be truely protable it would be better to use Fat32 but NTFS is more secure. Fat also consumes an amount of space to hold the file tables but is less flexible in regards of block sizes. mikebartnz (21)
