| 147944 | 2003-05-27 09:15:00 | I was plagued by this problem for months after installing WindowsXP and OfficeXP. Spooling and printing under Word 2002 took for ever and response under Word slowed down to a crawl while the spooling/printing process was running . I assumed it was the printer drivers and updated them frequently. But a tip on an obscure tech site fixed the problem. a) apparently WindowsXP or OfficeXP, I am not sure which, by design, takes up to 100% of CPU use during certain parts of the printing process ...and b) there is conflict between two or more peripherals if they are using USB ports at the same time. I looked at my machine. I had a USB scanner which was normally off when I was working in Word and printing, I had a USB printer, and I had a 4 port USB hub that was connected and lit up all the time waiting for me to plug in a memory stick or other USB device. I pulled the plug on the USB Hub and hey presto all my printing problems and Word slowdown was fixed. Roger |
