147898 2003-05-27 05:22:00 Afternoon All,

I'm somewhat shocked at the price of replacement vid cam batts - has anyone found someone who is realistically priced in this area? Went to one NZ site where the price was more than the new brand name battery!

In particular a panasonic vid cam.

Cheers

147900 2003-05-27 06:53:00 You often get what you pay for.

Battery packs are made up from individual cells.
Each cell has a "nominal capacity" in mAhr rating. These cells are in series, and commonly available cells will deviate in capacity by about +/-10% between cells.

The reason some packs are expensive can be that each cell has been tested for capacity, and the entire pack is made from capacity matched cells.

If a cheaper pack is made from unmatched cells, then as the charge remaining gets low, some cells are actually reverse polarised at the point they go flat first, and this seriously limits the overall life of the pack as these cells get damaged.

Yup - that's what shocked me (the price).

Thanks for the info GF - just feel that it's (well, almost) like the inkjet printers where you can get a new printer for the price of the cartridges...
