148783 2003-05-31 06:13:00 Pc locks up and is becoming annoying!!
Everytime I powerup/boot up the Pc, it's guaranteed within a few minutes to completely freeze up, requiring a "reset" to get going again, on very very rare occasions it will come out of it.
After hitting reset, it (thankfully) doesnt happen again, what can be taking place on 1st boot up, that doesnt happen after reset!? and more importantly what can be causing the routine freeze-up. Ohh for a monitoring tool that could record the "last 10 seconds" and give some indication of what's going on! The freeze up happens regardless of what I'm doing - I can even do nothing at all - it still freezes within 2 or 3 minutes! any pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated.

148784 2003-05-31 06:23:00 You will have to provide details of your computer system & OS, plus any history for this problem such as how long it has been happening, recent software installs that may have triggered it etc.

In the meantime, boot into safe mode and see how it runs there for starters.

I am presuming that you have adequate free disk space, you have a current AV program, up-to-date virus definitions, and you have cleared out any spyware using Spybot or Adaware. These are basic housekeeping matters that may not help your problem but provide a stable starting point (of sorts).

Cheers

also that you have run ScanDisk & Disk Defragmenter as well.

148786 2003-05-31 13:54:00 Someone told me this little trick a few weeks ago, and I managed to diagnose what was going on. (My pc was freezing up lots as well)

Right click My Computer.
Select 'Manage'
Click the + on Event Viewer tree
Click on System
Double click on any 'Error' things you see in there.

You might have quite a few of them happening around the time of the crash which could prove a few system problems.

Write back and tell us what the error messages are...if any?

148787 2003-06-02 02:50:00 Yeah~~ sorry bout that, realised afer I'd posted that I left out some info~
ok.. I'm using Win98se, p166(ok it's getting a bit old) 65m'ram , disk space- "C"drive has 950 megs free space, I'v got all the programs installed on partition "E", and stored files, internet downloads etc on separate drive "D", which is solely for storage- nothing installed on this drive.
Error messages~ none.. everything just freezes up, rare occasions it happens straight away, but the norm is within 2 - 5 minutes, and as I said.. I can leave it alone after boot up and do nothing, or be active in any program at all.. either way it freezes up, and on even rarer occasions it'll come out of it by itself after a minute or two.. but these are rare as blue moons! or hens teeth! :)
Hmm... right click "my computer and click "manage".. darn! u must be one some other op system.. I don't have a "manage" item in this menu~

148788 2003-06-03 06:20:00 It could be your power supply deteriorating. Try having it tested to rule out that possibility. tommy (2826)
