148696 2003-05-31 01:44:00 Hi, I have purchased a compaq 6420an desktop with xp home ed., and would like to transfer xp to my other compaq computer currently running windows 98se. I know it has enough space to fit xp in it and to run it, but xp wasnt supplied to me on disc. Is there a way to transfer it over? Cheers! Kris (3905)
148697 2003-05-31 02:00:00 No can do. Even if the equipment inside is the same, the software serial numbers on hard drive etc is different. MS uses these in combination with computer hardware to produce the licence number. No number then you only get to use it for 30 days. Pheonix (280)

148699 2003-05-31 02:48:00 Ok. Thanks for your replies. I had rung Compaq and the guy (after trying to remember his own name for about a minute) told me it wouldnt fit on the other computer because of the gig requirements. I hadn't even told him a single spec yet!, and that they wouldnt tell me how because it could be tricky to explain. And these are the guys ive spent $10k with in 3 years. You've done much better. Thankyou. Kris (3905)
