2003-05-30 17:27:00 | You're onto it Metla! ;) Sorry Olldaddy, I think you'll find that even with Alcohol, you won't be able to make a backup of your discs as I don't think HP writers are new enough to cope with today's copy protections... Lo.

2003-05-30 18:50:00 | mmmmmmmh !!! I tend to think that a subject entitled "why" etc may stop some participants from viewing the posting as it is too vague. Maybe I am wrong and it has the opposite reaction and they like the mystery - something like a "lucky dip" Me - I definitely like to be as specific as possible, as I think we need more courtesy, not less, in this hectic, frantic world (not counting the Mainland) !! :D B-)

2003-05-30 22:37:00 | The reason the thread was called "WHY" was mainly from ignorance of the subject and do I have to call it Why Can't I Copy Why Can't BURN Why Can't I say WHY The above may have bought more participants but the thread is now more than many and I hope you are now more satisfied...Thanks for you input.... Your positive comments pertaining to your negative ones captures more viewers...I hope.....

2003-05-30 22:43:00 | I show my ignorance when I say I thought HP would be up with the play as they appear to be rated as the second leading world wide.....but if not please advise who is......although once some thing technical is on the market it now appears to be OUTDATED..... | olldaddy76 (2539) | |
2003-05-31 00:47:00 | HP are market leaders for other reasons... If you are looking for a writer than can 'do it all,' then you will need to invest in something like an Asus or Lite-On writer... the main reason being that both writers are capable of correct EFM encoding... Correct EFM encoding is one of the major components to the popular SafeDisc copy protection, etc... These writers aren't any more expensive than normal, and you can pick up a 52X Asus writer for $99 + GST nowadays too! I guess what you should do, is check this site (www.xlsoft.com) and see if your writer is listed there, and check to see if it is capable of correct EFM encoding. The idea that once something technical is on the market, it becomes outdated is a little naive too... It's like the old adage that a brand new car instantly loses 30% of its value as soon as you drive it out of the yard... The fact that there are better cars out there still doesn't change the fact that you can still get from point A to point B... you just have to accept the limitations of speed, etc... The same can be applied to CD-writers... how much faster have CD writers gotten since last year? I have a 40X, 48X and soon a 52X writer for 3 different machines... all do the same job but you could argue the 40X is outdated... the thing is you need to figure out what you want to use your PC for, purchase hardware for that use, accept that newer hardware will come along, but use your current setup to its fullest potential before the next upgrade. Lo.

2003-05-31 00:52:00 | Every hewwit packard machine ive pulled apart simply had a rebadged unit in them. My guess is hp dont and never have made a cd drive. Furthermore,as far as outdating goes. My burner is a 16 speed, takes 4.20 to burn a 700mb disc. Thats plenty fast for the normal user, infact the most ive ever burned in one session has been 6 cd's. Recently ive been putting the asus model in a few systems, they are at the moment my personal favourite.

2003-05-31 03:26:00 | Thanks for your informative and interesting reply.......I went on "the site" and then downloaded Japanese text display from windows update which I have known about but never ever had the courage to download and read about CD writers...... I have downloaded Alcohol 120% and I am advised if there is trouble installing I should download WINDOWS installer....I have W98SE and am again reluctant to pursue any further.......If I compare the cost of ASUS with the Alcohol software there is no contest....wondering and still cogitating........What would you do?
