| 148669 | 2003-05-30 22:47:00 | I had some bad luck recently with a Maxtor 80GB HD. When I went to purchase a new HD, I noticed Maxtor had shortened their warranty from 3 yrs to 1. Whats the story, or is there a story? I went to Staples ,just shopping, and saw the Maxtor 80 GB 7200rpm HD for $99.00. There was no sale anounced, but there it was. I had waited till well after last Xmas to see if the going price on that unit , $139.00, would go down. And itn did go down to $119.00. So when I saw it back around May 1 for $99.00 I decided -get one! Or two! But when I returned a week or so later, all the old packages were gone, replaced with new labels, showing a limited 1 yr. warranty. Was there some kind of recall or what? Yes maxtor has changed there warranties to 1 year, apparantly to bring them into line with the warranties on other computer parts which generally only come with a 1 year warranty. I believe all the other hd makers have moved or are moving to 1 year warranties. While this does sound like a bad thing, its not that bad, as if an hd is going to fail then something like 85% of them do it in that first year. |

I couldn't name a single manufacturer who still has 3 years on their HD's... that said, I've never had a HD fail, so am lucky. Lo. |

Circut City, Manchester, only carried Seagate HDs, 80GB, 7200rpm, 3 yr. warranty-went for $139., Comp USA, had a Comp usa HD , Maxtor, 80GB, 7200 rpm, 1 yr waranty -$129. ,same as Staples in Enfield, Ct. Best prices I know of are at Tiger Direct .com -{good service and support} and Directron .com. {good prices, not as good service} Both have full selection , TigerDirect sends me great catologues. | WILLWILLWILLWILL (236) | ||

| 148677 | 2003-05-31 08:07:00 | What a strange post. As soon as I saw 'Staples' I was puzzled as I don't recall any Staples in NZ, but have seen them in America/Canada. Quoting prices & availablity on this site, about things in North America without defining sources, is misleading. |

| 148678 | 2003-05-31 09:15:00 | you can still buy hard drives with a 3 year warranty.. though you do pay a little extra for the option... (should be 7% extra for a 3 year warranty and 4% extra for a 2 year warranty.. ) I just got an 80 gig Seagate 7200.7 w/ 3 year warranty option |
