| 149020 | 2003-06-01 08:35:00 | I have been sent a work CD with everything on it made with MS publisher. Great! As I dont have publisher (or any MS software for that matter, apart from OS) I though it would be no problem to find a viewer to at least see the files, let-alone edit them, but oh no ameigo, no such luck! Does anyone know of any other application that can view and edit .pub files (convert them to html would be even better) without actually having to get MS publisher its self as it is not easy to even find a trial download? Surely I am not the first one to strike this problem and there must be a workaround? Cheers. |

| 149021 | 2003-06-01 08:54:00 | I am not aware of any workaround, as the issue is complicated by MS change of format between Publisher versions as well. There are as you say many people facing this issue but I am not aware of any that have solved it. You may need to adopt my solution. Buy Publisher XP.... :) |

If I bought publisher, I would comitting the very sin of comforming to the software, rather than having software that recognises other formats amiblcaly. Thanks for the advice guys, appreciate it, but I will send the CD back and get iit exported to a format that is multiplatform. Not that smart using a narrow focused program like publisher for material that is destined for CD's and the web anyway, in my opinion of course. Thanks. |

Unless you know what version of MS Pub the file was created in you will not be able to open the .pub file unless that version is installed in your PC. Each version of MS Pub was unique, earlier or later versions will not open anything but the host year. | John W (523) | ||

A newer version of Publisher is able to read and edit previous versions. Eg Pub 2000 (XP) can open/edit Pub 98 and 2000 files. However once a file has been edited by a newer version and saved the previous versions can't access the file. Ian |

| 149026 | 2003-06-02 13:39:00 | Wow. this is becoming unbelievable! Who would want to use such narrow focused software that is only half backward compatible, not cross platform compatible, in an area that by virtue of its name is often for multiple uses, e.g. 'Publishing' and expect people to pay gold for it! I am sure If any other company produced software like that they wouldn't last 5 minutes. Shows the power of leverage & product loyalty from bundling and people taking it for granted that because it is made by a big company that is must be ok! Then we get people like Trevor Mallard spending 10 million to put this stuff in schools which perpetuates the problem! I thought schools were about autominy? |

When I was at college last year before I completed it, they had at lest two different version of publish!!! Publisher 2000 & XP! & When every the had problems upload the school newsletter or some news which one of the staff, members did in XP, I had to take it home to upload & it was a pain to find out it was save in XP format not 2000!!!!, so I would have too wait till the following Monday to get the file!!! |
