148877 2003-05-31 23:39:00 Recently when I booted the computer I got a blue-screen with a message informing me that there was an error with my device drivers...something about compatibility, and some devices would be disabled. I only recently noticed that my two CD drives, one CD-Rom and one RW, had disappeared. I tried to reinstall them with the driver I still had on my system, and by Control Panel - Add Hardware, but to no avail.

I cannot think of anything I did before booting that had anything to do with the drives.

I'm using Win98 SE.

Thanks

148878 2003-06-01 03:18:00 Maybe you could try removing them from Add/Remove Hardware then physically unplug them, reboot, close down once more then plug one drive back in, start up and let Windows detect "new hardware", install driver and ensure the drive works.

If it does close down again, plug in second drive and repeat above process. Hopefully they will both work again.

148879 2003-06-12 09:08:00 Thanks for the response, I kind of forgot about the problem because I haven't needed to use the drives, but now I really do need to sort it out.

At the moment they aren't installed at all...when I tried to install them via Add New Hardware, all it came up with as new hardware Primary and Secondary IDE controllers (Dual Fifo) which the Device Manager seems to think are hard drive controllers :S

Physically unplugging the drives seems to be a rather frightening solution, but I suppose if there's no other option that will have to be it.

Thanks
