try searching through the many options for auto dialling on either pc
and make sure the internet dial box doesnt have the auto passwd checked. youll hav to type it in every time but at least u wont hav to connect each time.
or else its a virus

148958 2003-06-04 06:47:00 As Susan said above, a firewall would tell you exactly what programs want to access the internet, although not why.

I run Zone Alarm on my windows PC and it has often told me all sorts of storys about programs that want to report home for no good reason, tis worth a look at, just to get the added preformance. It also has an internet lock which would be good for times when you are using the second PC for say word processing, and don't therefore need internet access, even though windows wants to update itself, or whatever.

148960 2003-06-05 12:09:00 Hi

BS, that is exactly the thinking the virus makers and hackers would like ALL computer users to have. But believe me, that attitude is counterproductive in this day and age. Put a positive spin on things. There are many free firewalls out there, that are easy to set up. I mean, the NZ PC World has good articles on just this subject. Check out the back issues at your local library.

Zone Alarm and many others are free they are rather good at detecting spyware, and many other things.. If you want to know why someone could benefit by putting a firewall up, read my previous post. It is ideal for stopping the request for internet access right in its tracks, which is what this thread is about, right????

I have a firewall built into SuSE linux, which is my networks gateway to the rest of the world, but i still run ZA on the 'doze box because 'doze systems are so often targeted by viri, trogans, and spyware. These programs are like hacks from the inside, rather than from out.

It is often a notice that "weird unknown program wants internet access" that is not only my first, but is my only alert that some amazing free program is infact more than what it seems.

148962 2003-06-06 01:28:00 I had this problem and on my PC it was caused by a trojan called wsock32.exe in a windows sub directory (forgot which one) Sygate firewall picked it up.

148963 2003-06-15 03:43:00 I had this problem with WinXP (HOST with modem) and Win98 (CLIENT). The Win98 computer kept making the WinXP computer dial onto the internet especially when user logged onto the Win98 computer.

I solved this and increased convenience by;
1. Changing the WinXP computer settings so the Win98 computer could not initiate the connection (i.e. could not make the WinXP machine dial the internet).
2. then downloading and installing on both computers "Remote Disconnection Utility" from www.twiga.ltd.uk (so internet connection and ALSO DISCONNECTION can be made from the Win98 client computer.

For 1. above on the Host (computer with modem in):
1. Start menu > settings > network connections
2. right click on your dial-up connection and choose "properties"
3. select the "advanced" tab
4. under internet connection sharing unselect the 2nd check box (i.e. Establish a dial-up connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the network.)
