2003-06-01 04:59:00 | Hi all, I have two PCs on a peer-to-peer network, both running XP home edition. The problem I want to get rid of is that any time the slave pc is turned on, it automatically dials up and connects to the internet (as long as the master pc is turned on of course). Why does it do this, and how can I stop it from doing this. I only want it to dial up when I want to go onto the net, not just it feels like it! Regards, andy

2003-06-01 06:46:00 | Is it dialling up on it's own or does it open up Internet Explorer. I take it you have been down the path of Tools-Internet options-connection-dial whenever etc... | Pheonix (280) | |
2003-06-01 07:04:00 | It doesn't open anything - just wants to connect to the web. Could it be Windows Update or that MS Chat thing? If so, I'd really like to kill it! I only notice it if SWMBO is using the slave pc (hers) while on the master (mine) and it suddenly tries to dial up. | andy (473) | |
2003-06-01 07:59:00 | Does it try to dial up while your PC is off and you start hers? (I take it hers is the one trying to connect to internet.) | Pheonix (280) | |
2003-06-01 09:22:00 | Is your auto dial up ticked?in connection box. | Thomas (1820) | |
2003-06-01 23:21:00 | Mine is the one with the modem. Hers connects to the net via the lan, ie through mine when it is turned on. Yes, my auto-connect is ticked, but why does hers want to connect to the net as soon as it is booted?- mine is running the same os and it doesn't try to dial up when booted. I don't know how to tell if it tries to connect when mine is turned off. It just brings up the message that the lan cable is unplugged, so I suppose it figgers it can't connect cos there is no lan connection.

2003-06-01 23:34:00 | OK thanks for that Andy, it is now straight in this old head. Sounds like a program wants an online update check. Also could be a "spyware" program. The spyware is easiest to check as running Spybot will detect&remove this. So obviously my next question is ..Does SWMBO have spybot on her computer?

2003-06-02 04:37:00 | No, we don't have spybot on either pc. I think the thing that is trying to start is that MSN messenger thing - its on hers but not on mine. I tried to get rid of it but it came back again. I seem to remember that someone suggested changing the filename so it couldn't start up, but I can't really remember. I'll get spybot and load it and see what happens - thanks for your help. | andy (473) | |

2003-06-02 05:10:00 | It could be one of quite a few programs wanting to go online. If you put a firewall program on that computer it should be able to tell you exactly what is trying to dial out. But give Spybot a run first. | Susan B (19) | |
