1314554 2012-11-24 18:57:00 Half the links on Dick Smiths website are down today.

That's the sort of thing I expect from my website.

1314557 2012-11-24 20:03:00 I'm not surprised they suffered that loss. The re branding did them nothing. They are exactly the same at every other shitty electronics peddler in NZ. They had a great chance to re brand and sell different and competitive products such as non crap TV's and PC's as well as electronic components. Now I need to drive into wellington to Jaycar if I run out of 330 resistors :( The Error Guy (14052)
1314558 2012-11-24 20:52:00 If they have managers like they do in the Napier branch no wonder they make a loss.

1314559 2012-11-24 22:04:00 The demise of home electronics hobbying is more or less world wide.

"Electronics, a dying hobby/job?" aardvark.co.nz

"What Happened to the Electronics Hobby?" www.hawestv.com

I suppose we have to be grateful that Jaycar set up branches in NZ, though when I want anything it is easier to go online than to drive into Wellington.

There can't be much incentive these days for youngsters to get into the hobby.

1314561 2012-11-24 22:24:00 You are right. I now get digital/electronic low to mid price items from trademe or particularly ebay. Such a vast diverse range for so much cheaper. Our local dick smiths mega store is just empty space. Many customers go there to get photo's processed. Not much else. kahawai chaser (3545)
1314562 2012-11-24 22:31:00 They turfed out their electronics draws of switches, fuses etc and lost me in heartbeat. Now I have to drive to Jaycar. prefect (6291)
1314563 2012-11-24 23:52:00 Just reading over this it looks like dickhead smith lost a lot of custom to jaycar! I buy most of my stuff online but when you need something it's great to nip down to dicky's and grab it (not any more tho)

As a younger chap I used to enjoy their Funway electronic kits. Great things they were!! came with all the parts and a pre made PCB, all you did was figure out where each bit went and solder it down.
