Many thanks for that, just what I'm looking for.

There used to be a company in the South Island called Thermodynamics something or rather - who sold me my solar hot water DC pump But I can't track them down anymore. Looks like it's an import.

1314483 2012-11-30 05:50:00 However, years ago I built my own and it worked brilliant. The only problem was it was in breach of the existing Plumbing Regulations :) (because it had a couple of one way valves) and the Electrical Regulations :) because it was pump circulated system via a couple of temperature sensor switches on the roofs solar panel, etc.

From another wrinkly member <grin>, BUT, do you know of a website that may provide plans for a system such as yours. We are semi remote and are very very interested in reducing our hot water costs, which at present are 100% grid power. We are small time into solar power and are in the process of providing solar power for our house lighting - one small step at a time. Though solar water heating would be the first preference. Sorry to others for stealing the thread, but its very important to us !

Just one small step for mankind.

Only too happy to help if I can curly.

I don’t know of any websites, and I don’t have any technical drawings, because they’re all in the head. :)

However, it’s not hard unless you get into running the solar heating and fire wetback in a parallel situation. Even then, the only real problem is the wetback acting a radiator and cooling the water when the fire isn’t going.

However, the first thing is to forget convectional current systems. (Ohhh I hear the outcry.)

For Solar Heating to work efficiently the water must be pumped for starters.

(I see them lining up to have a go at me.)

Now, this is where we have a bit of a stutter. Ellpow has directed us to what we need, but I can’t find a local supplier. My original pump came courtesy of the Waikato Hospital, the Hamilton Telephone Exchange or a firm called Cook Heating. It was a long time ago and I doubt I could find one these days. :D

Anyway, until we locate a suitable pump there isn’t much point in explaining the rest.

I look forward to being attacked from all quarters by those who believe you don’t need to pump the water. :D

1314486 2012-12-02 02:00:00 Just checked a few prices here

http://www.expatistan.com/

And it seems that New Zealand's power is not really expensive.
It is a lot cheaper in Seoul and a bit cheaper in Toronto.

But dearer in Melboure and Sydney and Berlin.

I did a quick check Comparing Tauranga and Brisbane overall and they reckoned it was 32% dearer to live in Brisbane .

I can assure you it wasn’t in August when I was last there .

You’re looking at Aus petrol say A$1:40 l against NZ$2:10 l
GST Aus 10% with 0 on unprocessed food against 15%
Electricity about 2c kWh cheaper in Aus and includes GST with no sneaky fees .
Food and Clothing, much cheaper in Aus Wife tells me .
House rental, much the same if you’re renting .

So how they are doing their creative accounting eludes me .

Anyway, I’m heading back in a couple of weeks so I’ll see how things are then . :)

What is house rental like if you are squatting ?

And there is no point in mentioning GST differences as every country has different rates of GST/VAT.

When we introduced GST sales tax was removed and income tax lowered.

That site is run by an English bank, so I don't think they have any interest in making NZ look dearer than Brisbane.

But as I said the data is user entered, so it is not 100% accurate.

You can register and enter any prices that you have.

And of course the site converts all figures to a standard dollar price which does not allow for higher wages in some countries.
