1314439 2012-11-25 19:59:00 As regards how to get lower power prices none (aside from me) has really come up with any actual suggestions!

Firstly, the power companies must be able to make a reasonable profit, or they will not be able to afford maintenance and network improvement which is obviously essential for a first world (dur) country.

1314441 2012-11-25 20:09:00 Oh wait, I’ve just noticed down the bottom of my bill is something called an “Electricity Market Fee”. What the hell is that? Does anyone else pay one?

Anyway, it’s paid per kWh of usage and ups the kWh price to 27.4c per kWh plus GST of course.

This country has just one Rort after another these days. Someone explain this.

How can petrol be around $1.40 a litre in Aus and $2.10 here?

How can GST be 10% in Aus with nil on unprocessed food and 15% on everything here?

Then there is the Electricity that we’ve already covered.

It just goes on and we don’t seem to have anyone capable of stopping the rot. :(

1314442 2012-11-25 20:15:00 I can explain all of those.

I have seen some AA figures and the basic cost of petrol is the same in both countries. It is just that our goverment puts a lot more tax on petrol. (Does it all go to the roads now?)

Australia has lower GST because they are a richer country and their government gets royalties from mining companies so they need less tax from elsewhere.

Until NZ gets mining and expands our population we will continue to be a high cost country.

Explaining them and agreeing with them and changing them are 3 different things.

1314443 2012-11-25 20:50:00 I have seen some Aussie forums and they are all moaning about their new high power prices!
(And they earn much more than us)

Dead right Digby, they earn an awful lot more than us and they are raising hell over their new power prices.

If their power prices / wages ratio was upped to the same as ours there’d be blood in the gutters.

As I said before, if you consider the cost of mining the coal, transporting the coal and processing the coal, compared to collecting the rainwater and the cost of maintaining their transmission network over such an extensive area compared to ours, you’d wonder how they do it so cheap. Or, more the point, why we’re so dear? :annoyed:

Australia has water proof custom wood, we have none.

NZ isnt a rich country & The average Kiwi doent earn alot of $ (the so called 'average wage' often quoted is BS)

The real issue is , NZ is becoming too expensive for Kiwi's to live here
water bills, rates, power, petrol, house prices......

At least we have cheap used cars (for now)

Australia has water proof custom wood, we have none.

And I hear that you can import Australian roofing for cheaper than it is here.
And yet we have lower wages
The Aussie Dollar is higher
And there is a freight cost etc

So if that is true our building suppliers are ripping us off!

1314447 2012-11-25 23:05:00 You think it is expensive where you are in New Zealand? Come to the King Country where we get a really cheap unit charge!!!! But screwed with the fixed price Lines Charges...those are the charges that make up the bulk of your power bill the cost of the ditribution network and maintainance.

It is coming to a Lines Supplier near you eventually and it is not a pretty sight! Imagine paying the same monthly charge all year around reviwed every april based on the previous winters load that you have set for your household in addition to your supply usage. Then imagine going away for a month and still being billed that same amount evn though you have not used diddly squat power!

Thats a reality and yes even with using gas for cooking and alternatives for heating that dont involve electricty your still stung nearly $100 plus per month just to have a power connection!

Now you think electricty is expensive? The price is in the distribution cost not the production.

What are line charges ? We don't seem to pay any here. We get a daily charge and an all inclusive charge.

I think you will find that line charges and daily charges are the same thing.
